Go with the Hankook Ventus--better tire and a $75 rebate going on now. Im sure the Sumi's are fine but my homework came to the conclusion the Hankooks are better tires.
I have had Bridgestone SO3' Pole Positions (5 sets of rears), Kumho MX's, and Hankooks---have been happy with all of them.

I'm selling HTR Z III about 10:1 to the Hankooks in the last year or so. Sorry, but overwhelming reviews both here and on 6speed disprove this. I would say that wet traction may be a touch better at full tread with the Hankooks, but dry performance is not better.

Well since this has been bumped...
Have about 2,000 street miles and 100-150-ish track miles on the III's I ordered from Damon.
No complaints whatsoever. Much more comfortable than the PS2's they replaced, perfectly fine for the street and a great learning tool at the track. Can not comment on performance in the wet, yet.
They do not have the maximum grip of more expensive tires, obviously, but man are they fun. Great feedback - lots of warning, easy breakaway and easy recovery.
Wear seems to be next to nothing, too.
Happy customer.

Hankooks are reviewed higher thant the Sumi III's, both in wet and dry conditions according to tirerack.com customers.

I bought a set of Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's for my SUV---worst tires I have ever owned but I bought them because everyone else told me they were great. Ranked one the highest on tirerack.com for on/off road tires. I own Continential Cross Connect LX's now.
BFG T/A's for my 77 Bronco---hands down a great tire.
Kumho Road Venture APT KL51 on the CX7
Consumers dont have much brand loyality.........well, besides Mac users.

Perhaps the HTR Z IIIs have been outselling the Hankooks because they have been around for longer and have been reviewed more than the Hankooks.
It's too soon in their relative lives, but I'd like to get the opinions of those who have used both tires - and see which they would buy again or recommend.
I suspect one can't go too far wrong with either tire.

C&D liked the Ventus (better than the benchmark PS2 in some cases.) Wish they had included the Sumi's too.

Sumitomo HTRZIII on track
My track times are still coming down so it's not a stable base for comparison but I have found the Sumitomo HTRZIIIs to be 'lively' but fast on a coolish track.
My car has had alignment changes etc in between too so I can't compare them directly to the S02's it used to have, but in dual sprint motorsport events my 996 turbo tip ran within 2 seconds a lap of the fastest cars (a GTR and an r-comped 996 GT3 which the 'fastestlaps' site suggests should be at least 2 to 3 seconds a lap faster based on similar 80 second racetracks).
I did sweat my tyre pressures a fair bit though, adjusting between sessions to maintain around 36, 44 psi hot, with it finally cooling back to 26, 34 psi overnight.
They squeal a lot in corners and dance around more than I'd like under braking (new alignment may be to blame + ABS and proportioning was faulting to off) but I have every faith in their ability to hold together and lap fast for a street tyre. They also held up much better than most at a local gymkhana (think very tight autocross) run on a disused coarse chip runway that tore chunks out of many other tyres.
The Sumis launched really well too, seeing me beat the GTR to turn one both times we ran together. Apart from maybe getting a second set of r-comps to close the gap to the GT3 on track, I'm pretty happy to get another set of HTRZIIIs again. Like others, I've noticed they flat spot when parked though.

Never tried the Sumis so I can't compare, but after lots of anecdotes here + reviews, I went with the Ventus. Meh. I felt their sidwalls/feel was soft and squirmy (I have 17" cups, so 18"ers YMMV), and was very much put off by them compared to the Kumhos I had previously. After posting here, I found these kooks needed higher pressures and longer scrub in. Truth. They feel more solid now and definitely run high pressures (I have 37/39, IIRC). So yes, I "kind of" like them, or at least no longer hate them: good budget tire, overall but not thrilled.
BUT...why no love for the Kumho here? They get seem to get great reviews, and witness the C&D chart (thanks Mongrel!) for dry handling (don't care about wet), and the Kumho seems like a very good candidate. This info along with my previous satisfaction with Kumhos (albeit previous gen Kumho) makes tips me toward these for the next purchase. Thoughts on the current Ecstas reviewed here, anyone?
