Default My 993 Race Car Project Is Done!

Here are some pics of my completed race car. Now that it is done, I am not sure that I will be keeping it but who knows. I am shaking it down at an autocross tomorrow so we will see what she can do. The suspension, Brakes and Chassis are RSR spec but the engine and trans are stock...ish.

That looks slick!

What type of cooler do you have under the deck lid?

Wonder if you take a HP hit with that intake. bet the air temp is cooler in that area, not to mention the sound it must make.

Do want!

Trophy is correct, it is a trans cooler though it isn't hooked up at the moment. The car was originally built in 2004 as a 25hours of Thunder Hill endurance racer. It ran the 25 in 2005 with Randy Pobst and Craig Stanton driving but suffered transmission failure at the 18 hour mark while leading the race. I bought it in pieces with no trans and have been putting it back together over the last 6 months.

It may be For Sale in the near future as the realities of a trailer only race car are setting in but I will wait to make that decision until after I get a little seat time in her.

It looks great. Yes, these cars can be a bit of a black hole for which we throw money...

Throw some color on that thing

Looks official! Does the stock decklid stay put or still come up at 50?

Nice. Some color would make it even better.

The split grill is just that, a grill like on early cars. The motors and mechanisms are completely gone and there are only 4 bolts holding the grill on.

When I got it it had way way to much color on it for my tastes so I took it all off and sorta started over. It ran at the 25 without the sharks mouth. It and the wheels were painted sometime between the race and when I bought the car. What these pictures don't show though is how faded, cracked, etc. the graphics were as well as significant damage to the fiberglass bumper and front fenders that needed to be repaired. Here is what it looked like before the race, and when I got the car.

That must be a blast to drive, do you know the weight?

Now that I've seen the "before" shots with all the graphics I prefer the plain look.

How was the auto-x?

The autocross went well though it was a little wet in the morning and the car is down right evil on old, hard, cold tires in the wet. It has a 997 Cup clutch so getting it moving takes some getting used to but it revs out so nicely that it almost makes up for it. I turned the same times as a SCCA national champion in a fully tweaked/sponsored GMG 996 GT2 that was also running street tires today so I consider that a success. I have some tire rub on the front fender lips (front fenders are fiberglass so it mainly just sounds bad) when cruising around the pits that needs to be addressed with some filing up of the wheel opening but other than that the car ran like a top. I had about the 10th fastest time of the day out of 100 cars or so so I am pleased. I really need a dry warm day and some decent tires (was running on new but 10 year old BFG r1s) to really even begin to set up the suspension though as it was like driving a drift car. Anytime you even breathed on the gas it would light up big time (course was all 2nd gear). It was a blast to drive and makes me really appreciate fantastic brakes and excellent 4 channel ABS. Coming from 70s 911s and 914s I am officially a 993 convert. If I do sell this car, I will pick up a 95 993 and build a kinda streetable RS/CS clone. Think Bill V.'s car with much less regard for street use. Just has to be streetable enough to have a license plate which I am beginning to realize will never happen with this current car as it is OBD2

Glad to hear the car is finally up and running and that my old gearbox is being put to good use.

Cheers,
Joe

It shifted like butter but some of that may just be that the car I was racing for the last 6 month has a 915 trans in it .

One thing that struck me today was that our autocross group is really getting out of control. There were 3 diesel pusher motor homes with 30' enclosed trailers, 1 toter home with a 30' enclosed trailer as well as the numerous other trailered vehicles. One guy has a 2010 Cup on order that he is going to autocross and was bummed that it hadn't arrived yet. Another of our members just bought Patrick Dempsey's old 07 GT3 RS 36 hours before the event and drove it like it was meant to be driven (gorgeous car BTW). Last but not least, Ken Motonishi and Gary Thompson were out testing a new car. All of this for just a PCA autocross People are starting to take this super seriously.

Here are some pics from today because we all like pretty pictures I may also have some incar video but I am not sure how it turned out as the camera was giving me issues.
