Do personalized license plates attract negative attention?

Look fellows, we already own Porsches, we already stand out as we drive our thoroughbreds amist a world of econoboxes and plastic people-movers. Does the personalized license plate have a preppy, snootty, yuppy connotation to it? Does it attract jealous people, perish the thought, to vandalism?

Dont you guys think owning a Porsche is enough of a statement and the personalized license plate just rubbs it in peoples faces how much better you are than them??

Im torn by this issue.

Depends on what it says, I guess. I have my initials on my plate, just three random letters to everybody else.

I do, but yet I like the clean exterior look sans any extra chrome or such. Guess that is why I don't like to even run a license plate frame. jmho.

I have personalized plates and I go back and forth if I should go back to non personalized. Half the people I talk to about them like them (once I explain it...) the other do seem to get a bit snotty about the plates. Not sure it would be the tipping point for someone to actually vandalize a car though.

The personalized plates make the car fit right in where I live. I'm in the poorest section of one of the snooty towns in the area. I'm a blue collar guy in a white collar town. A White Sox fan in a Cubs town if you will. More people in this town probably have personalized plates on their cars than not. Hell... the car fits the area better than I do.

Even though european plates are not as customizable as in the US, I had a great one that I dumped due to several dis-advantages.
The worst mishaps I had was that people (friends or strangers) always come to you and say, I saw you were at this place last week, or that club two days ago, at this hour, at that intersection, constantly !!!
Could not cope with that fact. (moreover, I am single)
my plate today is so clumsy, I don't remember what it is.

Not exactly a personalized plate but it seems like many of our local Rennlisters have their own connections with the Washington State Department of Licensing and have requested and received 993,996,997 or 911 numerals on their plates including myself. On my drives up to Canada, I've had several instances when the border customs agents have asked if we (Porsche owners) conspired to get these plates. The conversation ends with a chuckle when I tell them that we are well connected.

I see enough personalized plates on minivans that the practice doesn't stand out too much these days. So long as one doesn't have a snooty-sounding tag, it should be fine. My tag carries the name of my former recording studio, out of sheer nostalgia.

I had them, not very clever; when you put so much detail into a car why not?

I agree wholeheartedly. When 'we' pass someone by (we're always passing other cars right?) we either elicit a positive or a negative 'emotion' - I see this ALL the time when I flick my eye to the rear view mirror - and examine their faces - as I merge back into traffic. The personalized plate either adds a 'tip-of-the-hat' or 'up yours' to the encounter -- all depends on the plate 'message' and the current, emotional state, of the person reading it.

People interpret things very differently, depending on their mood.

I chose my plate for mainly TWO reasons -- it was our Wedding Song - Etta James -- and, of course, the other reason I don't need to explain here!

Mine gets a lot of questions, especially out of state, most of which are "is that legal?"

My last name is Lohmeyer. Mine reads "FLY LOH".

I think that communicates.
