Probably a dumb question, but I'm gonna ask it anyway. What's the difference between a 'Coilover' system and a shock/spring setup. Are coilover springs different somehow in the way they are designed? They do just slip over the struts, right? Sorry if this is obvious, but the differentiation has eluded me.

JP, not a dumb question at all. Coilovers are considered a one piece design, springs mounted over shocks/struts.They are installed as one piece and replaced as one piece. Coilovers offer more ease in height adjustment, many have adjustable dampening (and compression), and usually perform better than shock/spring set ups.
On a shock/spring set up, you can use different products from different manufacturers, while a coilover is designed as one unit for optimum performance.

Great price on these. GLWS!

My interpretation of "coilover" being used in the Porsche world goes back to the blitz of RSR struts in the early '80's where some were replacing a torsion bar spring with a coil over the shock/strut that could accept the spring over the shock. Similar, you had race cars like 510's and 2002's that had a coil spring rear suspension, but the spring was attached separately on the trailing arm from the shock. The earliest racing shocks, like Carreras (brand, not car), made an integrated coil over shock assembly you wholly replaced, like Mark said.
