+1 Exactly. Man I shudder when I think of the handful of 996's I looked at before buying my cab.

It boggles my mind that there wasn't a class action suit launched a long time ago to deal with this. It isn't acceptable.

Putting aside the tiresome internecine 996/993 owners' pissing match, I have to say I am appalled at the way Porsche has handled the outrageous 996 debacle. I thought the 996 troubles were the stuff of internet lore, until my coworker's pristine, babied 26k mile '99 cab cracked it's block internally a few months ago and required a new engine. I counseled her through the painful, expensive process, and Porsche just acted like it was normal to replace the engine at this stage in the car's life (regardless of its very low mileage) and refused to assist in any way (they did however charge her $200 for the diagnosis). At the turn of the 21st century Porsche completely changed its culture and became merely a profit seeking entity. They are now squandering the culture and reputation that managed to convince people to shell out huge $$ for their soulful little cars in the first place. Oh well. It was awesome while it lasted!

Seems like that mentality is soon to become even more pervasive throughout the organization. Glad we have the cars we do...

I agree, and it's a real shame. I recently went shopping for a new sports car, and looked at the new 997. The Porsche "feeling" just wasn't the same as it used to be. It's a shame, because I had always wanted to buy a new Porsche (I bought both my 911s used). I went elsewhere for my new car, and Porsche could have had my business.

That feeling of stoutness from the air cooled engines, came about unintentionally, I think. Porschephiles and historians please correct me, but the porsche engineers designed the 911 engine, grandfather to the 993 engine, with motorsport reliability in mind. The 2.2 and 2.4 were bumped up in displacement over the years, but the the same basic design.

The 996 and its engine was designed with cost savings in mind. That in of itself is huge difference in design. Even so, no reason for a more "commercial" engine to die at 26k miles?!?! That speaks of a serious design flaw. I agree, just terrible!!

Unfortunately I think there have been turbo's that failed as well, just a lot less common.

can anyone tell me what could have caused my suspension on my 2003 C4S feel floaty lately. It is not as tight as before. Especially when I turn or drive on uneven streets. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may want to think about starting a new thread for that question.

The turbo, GT3 and GT2 use the old style (read reliable) IMS design. It's fine. In fact the 996TT is an incredibly reliable car. There's a guy with on the 996TT board with over 230K miles (original engine/turbos).
