I've had a couple of gel batteries go bad and become "unchargable" with a CTEK charger once they dropped below a fairly fully charged level. I have no idea what was happening at the chemistry level but they just wouldn't charge except with a 10 amp beast. Eventually they died completely and had to be replaced.

The 993's cig. lighter is hot, you can test it with a radar detector. That's why I always unplug my detector when I shut off the car.
