Default Floor Jack Question

So I was fortunate enough to receive a floor jack under the X-Mas tree yesterday from my father-in-law and I wanted to see if anyone has used or has any comments on the model.

It's a Craftsman 3 Ton Floor Jack Model: 50139. The only thing I'm concerned about is the height range: 5 15/16" to 19 1/4". Are these height ranges standard? My car is lowered and I doubt that this jack will fit under without some 2X6's underneath.

Thanks for your input.

If you can exchange it w/o causing hurt feelings, Sears sells the low-profile aluminum jack. BTW, you don't need 3 Ton capacity unless you are jacking up a serious truck. I just use a 2 ton for my F250SD.3,000 lb. rated AL does fine fine for the Porsches but, depending on how far it's lowered, you still may need to drive up on some boards. I use 4 ea. 2x12x2 ft. bevelled at the ends with 3M anti-skid tread on the bottoms to keep them from "scooting".

Hey Jon, my floor jack doesn't work very well initially under the engine jack point either. I end up jacking the cur up in stages anyway. I guess it depends on what you are going to do one the car is up and how high you want to get it. When I do get my car up on the stands, it is usually up there for a while so it doesn't bug me too much to do it in stages. And yes it takes some time to get it up there. If your thinking you just want to slip it under the engine jack point to get a quick lift you might want to opt for a lower profile floor jack.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I just checked the height on the p-car and I definitely will need 2X6's. In fact, I don't think it will even fit under my Volvo V70R wagon.

BTW, you don't need 3 Ton capacity unless you are jacking up a serious truck. I just use a 2 ton for my F250SD.3,000 lb.
I saw the low profile 2 ton but this isn't going to be enough for my wifes V8 XC90 (> 4,800lbs). Are you sure the F350SD is 3,000 lbs? All I need to use it for is switching out winter/summer tires/rims on the Volvos.

Bob, I'm not planning on any major projects like you recently completed.. yet. Should I keep what I have and just deal with ramps?

It's plenty. I've had the same jack for 6 or 7 years - no issues. Remember, you're not lifting the entire car at once...

My wife has an '07 XC90 and I've used the jack under it numerous times.

That is a good point. We do not lift the whole vehicle in one shot. Usually a corner at a time.

The jack stands are manufactured by Esco. Big flat round top with a nice rubber cushion. The last pic shows the stands fully extended.

They are expensive, but wort every penny. Highly recommended.

I like those stands. Steve is having a sale on them during the holidays. Question...how many stable is that car when all the way up on those stands? (What is the highest tourque setting I can use when wrenching underneath? )

The stands are way stable at max height. It is always recommended to use a safety net or blocking with jack stands. I use a set of wheels.

I have no clue on the max torque that can be used safely.

I bought the Tire Rack jack and two stand package and added another two stands. The jack is available separately, as are the stands. The jack has a range from 3.5" to 19" leaving plenty of room for jack pads to be used.

Very nice quality stuff!

How in the world do you get the car up that high on stands. How do you go from the lowest stand setting to the highest. How high does your jack go?
