I have read older posts but nothing real recent. I have been pondering the idea of using Amsoil in my 993 but wanted input from those that have had experience with it. Any pros or cons over Mobile 1? The stuff looks like it is the only true 100% synthetic on the market.

I ran the 20W50 Racing Oil (ARO OR AMO?) one season and I know of one independent Porsche shop in Phoenix that uses it. I'm sure its fine. All you can go on is the specs.

No. There are dozens of true synthethics. But Amsoil has been around longer than most. I've used Amsoil in most of my water-cooled cars for a long time. But I use Redline in the Porsche. The issue for air-cooled's is the amount of ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl-Dithio-Phosphate) in the formulation for wear, which has pretty much been eliminated in most oils. Most of the guys who rebuild these engines for a living and have posted here seem to think it's important. I know Redline has it because I've talked to them. A lot of guys use Brad-Penn for that reason, but I prefer to use a full synthetic. Some categories of Mobil 1 seem to be okay in the ZDDP content, some are not. What the content is of the various grades of Amsoil seems to be hard to come by. Would you ever run into a problem running Amsoil in your engine? I doubt it.

If you go to their web page, you can buy it, & see all the levels of everything in the oil.

See the chart at the bottom of the page, pretty good explanation there too:

As far as cost, if you buy one of their "preferred memberships" for a nominal fee, it brings the cost down within reason vs. M1, considering the quality difference (IMO). Shipping is from regional warehouses, I get mine in 2 days generally.
As far as brand preference goes, if you start getting into that this thread will go for seven or eight pages.
