Yes, the AC/Heat Vent to the left of the start / stop key. It is attached with 1 screw on the side of the dash. Simply remove the screw and pull the vent. It will pop out. Removal will provide good access to the VDO box and the control box with the use of a mirror. Take the control box to an electronics repair shop as they will do a much better job with solder than you probably will be able to do. They simply have much better equipment. They charged me $25 to completely redo all the cold solders. good Luck.

Hello, I'm in trouble.
I can't open my convertible (993 MY1995) nothing happens
can you explain me where to find control unit and fuse?
I have seen some pictures of the motor behind the rear seats but nothing about front latches
from the holes I can't see how they are
anyone can post some image or detailed instruction to release the latches?
thanks

G'day Ayrton
Do you have the Drivers Manual ? Is the dash warning light ON ?
Page 68 - Ignition ON, with Parking hand brake ON, press the rocker switch.
Page 102 - fuses, from memory (vague) #13 Green 30amp
Page 73 - Emergency Operation, you have to release the cab transmission bolts about 4 turns and then relaese the cab latch locks - holes above the windscreen about 10 full turns each. This is a last resort as you will have to sync the rear motors afterwards to return to auto operation.
Control Unit is way up under the dash L/H side mounted above out of sight and behind another VDO box.

G'day Sean
first of all let me thank you for the check list above
I try to answer...
yes I've the manual
the warning light is off
page 68 full respected
page 102 shows two places where to find fuses (I assume nr.13 is on the front case - is it right?)

- may be you think I'm a litlle bit shy, but my manual is in German and I understand only Italian and some English and French -

half done!
fuse #13 replaced, now the latches motors works fine, but I still have a problem since top desn't open itself
so I act manually
now I'll try the DIY section realignement instructions, may be it solves
if I quit the warning light on the panel, in the case of further mismatch or failure the other warnings works? or I risk a damage?

'95 993 convertible black

I seem to have a similar problem, but I my case the convertible top moves for about 2 inches and then the fuse lows out (No. 13 in the fusebox, 30A fuse.) You put in a new fuse and the same thing happens all over again. I checked the convertible top control unit and their solder joints, and they seemed to be fine. Any ideas what could be wrong with the roof?

Thanks.

Hey Mikefo,

Sorry, just saw thread. If you have anymore problems & want to borrow my computer board to see if that solves anything, just let me know. I was thinking of converting my top to manual when I get back home (out of town). Not sure why you stated you didn't want to do that? From my understanding, it is easy to convert back to automatic. If I start having problems with the top (so far I haven't), I would like t know which electronic store in town soldered your board?

Thumbs up

Hey guys,
Thanks for this timely and informative thread. I'm experiencing ragtop drama myself and my Porsche mechanic seems challenged by the top's difficult attitude. My top was going up and down just fine, but the locking motors wouldn't engage. Took out the controller and re-soldered a few suspect joints/connections, but this didn't help.

Took it to the local exotic car specialist who heavily favors Porsches, and he succeeded in determining that the driver's side locking motor had failed, but he also caused the top to stop working entirely in the process. He said he couldn't finish fixing the top issues until we replaced the failed motor. That part will be here Tuesday. I plan to replace it myself - very simple job.

In the meantime, I changed the top to manual up/down mode by loosening the 2 transmission nuts. I like it better this way anyway - no heavy top slamming down on my windshield frame.

Then I'll start over. This thread has given me some new ideas on what to check; my first thought is to attempt to re-align the top myself. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it difficult? I found a site that explains the alignment process in detail. It's on Pelican's forums:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...sm-repair.html
(I hope that posting this link doesn't violate a forum law. If so, please let me know and I'll edit.)

Thanks again for the good info! Wish I'd known about removing that heater vent before I removed the controller. It took me about 45-60 minutes to extract that sucker!

Regards,
BB

Don't mix this as a possible fix. I hate to beat the drum, but after the fuse, it's easiest and first thing people should try.... http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...d.php?t=566814

I as well am having top issues, (1995 993). I loosened the lock nuts on rear transmission units to open roof manually. The roof will lock closed but the motors continue to turn never seeming to find their 'end' points even though warning light goes off. This has seemed to cause a major electrical problem where headlights, horn, turn signal, and interior fan are not working.
At one point during summer while having this problem the roof motors stopped turning and everything functioned as normal, then after closing roof problems came back.
I have changed the electrical portion of ignition switch but that did not fix problem.
I have also searched exhaustively for anyone else with same issues but have found none.
Please please please help anyone.
