It's the same for a lot of cars, hell what does a 60's Vet got for? Or the first gen BMW M3, there super slow compared to the new ones, but nice ones are in the mid $30's where they were stickered at in the 80's.
A quick look will bring up about 100 997's for sale in the $50's, but only 10 993's.

You just don't "get it". It's not about what's "better", it's about what it is.

OK....here we go!!!
Stealth, Of the two 993s you purchased, did you pay over $50K for either of them? I am not saying that 993s are not great cars but there is no need to overinflate the values unless you truly believe that they are the best and Porsche is not capable of building anything better. Take a new 997 C2S for a spin. Try a PDK (we won't tell anyone!). You will understand.
20 years from now, very low mileage 993s might achieve collector value. But that is not what enthusiasts really want? We want to drive the daylights out of them.
BTW...I think I get it.

"I know what you guys want to believe that 993s never depreciate but when you can get a 2006 or 2007 C2S for $50 to $60K, which is FAR better than the 13 or 14 year old 993 with the required top end rebuild, I think we are talking about $45K, tops."
one of the more recent 'excellence' magazines puts the prices of 97 turbos above 2002-2005 turbos...not always just about 'better' or newer...all values fell in '08, but according to excellence, the turbo s actually appreciated $10K. don't know about accuracy of the table but found it interesting.

UPDATE (PART 3 - FINAL 'PART') :
Well.... so.... interesting statement about Seinfeld's Turbo S.... but I can't elaborate (sorry).
The car has a match to sample (to lipstick) red interior. It is a two tone (black and red) interior from Porsche - with every surface leathered... including window switches, vents, etc.
The exterior is a (special order?) Silver... with big brakes painted silver from the factory
It has every option on the car - except for carbon fiber. (so I am not going to bother repeating it here)
The Window Sticker (still with the car obviously) is 2 pages long, and the car was sold new for well over $120,000
The "best thing" about this car.... is the price. But the guesses that have been made are pretty close (50-60k). So... assume that is what the car was offered to me for. Even more important than that, the owner has no interest in selling it other than to me (the sale is not driven by $) - so, if I still want the car in 6 months....it is mine.
To be honest, I thought a car like this might go for $70,000 or so... so I was under the impression that the deal was unbelievable in my mind. But, even with it not being as much of a deal as I originally thought... I still think it is a good deal (for me). Thank you for all your input on the price... it is very valuable to me.
No "Part 4".... unless a purchase is made.

I actually agree with the other statements above (both in regards to the 993 and the 997) - the 997 really is an impressive car to drive (just has no sound!). I am sure when they start to flood the market, they will keep 993 prices steady (... they will probably offset any increase, instead of decreasing their value outright) Then again... there still is the "nostalgia" factor of the air cooled.
Things aren't helped any by the new Porscholkswagen company.

I agree with Stealth, it is not about better. There is a scarceity factor starting to affect prices of the low mileage 993s. AS they get older, there are fewer and fewer with really low mileage. These will command a higher price jsut because they are scarce. I think that the cars with extremely low mileage will also tend to be well optioned because their owners desire unique cars to savor rather than drive. This could also lead to unique cars that are weird as they reflect the tastes of their eccentric owners.

1) What's the best driver's car for $50K?
2) What's the best bang for the buck sports car for $50K?
3) What's the most solid sports car "investment" for $50K?
I believe that all the OP wanted to know was:
4) What's the value of a 15K C4S with all options?
My answer remains that it's still limited by Turbo values. Kind of like a big, beautiful, over-built house in an average neighborhood: only so much it can go for regardless of how much the owner has dumped in to it.

I have sold 2 C4S's in this year and last. One with 16,000miles for $63,000; the other around 20,000miles for $58,000.
I perfer them to the TT unlike most people. It is a very rare opinion, but I don't think im alone.
These are the buyers for the maxed out 4S's like the one you mention.

Only thing ridiculous about it is that you want something that is ridiculously hard to find.
How's that for a ridiculous answer?

I purchased my 97 C4S, 3 years ago this month. I paid almost $60k for it, it was over $60 with taxes. It has a ton of options, & was in very good shape with under 37kmi. Yes, I could have got a 996TT, or a Gt3 for the money, but it was not what I wanted or lusted after.
My 95 C4 was purchased just under 2 years ago in February. It has almost every option they has in 95. Leather everything, sport seats, M030, LSD, ect.. I got it with 71kmi & all records since new, paid $35k.
I looked at a few 997S's for a friend. Incredible car, very fast, & very precise. But it just doesn't feel special, you don't feel as connected to it. I have been thinking about getting a GT3 for Auto-X & a new DD.
The 993 is the BEST of the "old school", there is no debating it. It is the most evolved aircooled 911. I also believe it's the most beautiful 911 ever made. Elegant simplicity.
20 years from now a low mi well optioned 993 is going to be worth a TON! Just look at the early 70's cars, they are going for more then a 997 now!
