Sure enuf - when I did 'ignition on' - the air pump did NOT come on. So far so good.

I had my OBD-ii reader connected and took a looksee at the voltages of the (downstream) O2 sensors. Dahyum -- both showed .45V -- so, for all practical purposes there appears to be no 'obvious' difference (ignition on / engine off) inasfar as the O2 sensors are concerned - if the pump is running or not.

Oh well, back to the drawing board...

G.
Did you start the engine? Correct me if wrong, but if you did not start the engine, you are measuring the O2 content of the ambient air in the exhaust pipe, and not the O2 content of the hot exhaust from the engine. The engine exhaust O2 content would normally be low if combustion is going OK, and the air pump would bring the O2 content up since it injects fresh air into the exhaust gas stream, correct? But if the engine is not running, there would be no difference.

Cheers,

MIke

Both downstream O2 sensors were showing 0.45 V -- which is the normal signal that you get when both catastrophic converters are 'working efficiently'. If both cats are 'bad' or there is a problem with the gasses that are blowing by -- these downstream O2 sensors usually start showing a HIGHER voltage, e.g. .8 to .9V

Well, now that my NY inspection is a thing of the past (i.e. last Sept. - so now I'm not too worried if I trip a CEL) -- my next trick will be to remove the relay that controls the SAI pump - disabling it from running -- and seeing if that has any effect on the voltages of the two downstream O2 sensors.

Stand by, as they say.

Gerry
I have posted an explanation of how the SAI system is monitored in this forum several times. Check that out. You are not going to find anything looking at the output voltage of the O2 sensors.

Working on it....having a bitch of a time getting the connectors I want, but I am making slow progress. This is turning out to be more of a waiting game than I anticipated...I am missing one key part, and am waiting for an ETA from the manufacturer in Europe since they have to do a manufacturing run. This is what happens when you are dealing with a 12+ year old car.

I am sorry for the long wait but there is only one path to getting these parts officially.....so unless I decide to circumvent (and violate a whole bunch of copyrights, etc.) I have to wait.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for the update Mike! Personally I'm in no rush, just thought that you had a great idea and would like to get one of those kits before P1411 strikes

Thanks again,

Ilko

Is Amp finally entertaining the idea?

Almost have the parts for the prototyping stage...its been a real challenge. Know what I want to build, but need the parts to get the physical design done. Will turn it over as quickly as possible, and then I need a few guys with this problem to test the solution....I am sure there will be some takers. David is #1 on the list if he can wait.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike,
I'd love to volunteer as another tester. My 96 has had these problems for years; I flush and clean to pass emissions, only to hace the dreaded CEL come back.
regards,
Michael

I'd like to volunteer. I'm just over the border. Would like to get rid of the cel and currently have a corroded distribution manifold so I can't flush the ports.

I have a spare distribution manifold if interested.

Thanks for the offer. I'm thinking it is just corroded plugs. If it is more than that I will PM you .
