Default Can I re-use Brake Pad dampers on new pads?

Or should I just spend the $80 and be done with it...

I have not had the dampers on my car in years. No noise. I'll never install them again.

They have adhesive on them, so once you peel the old ones off the backing plates you'd have to use something to reattach.

I haven't had them for years and I love the noise. It reminds me of all the time I spend riding in a city bus while growing up...

I find they do not work at all reusing them. I even tried putting anti squeal spray on them, but still got noise. If you want quiet brakes, buy new ones (IMHO).

It can get expensive though if you regularly swap between street & track pads.

Thanks guys, it just seems a crap shoot as to brake noise. Some use them and get noise, some don't use the and have no noise! I'm not a track guy so I don't need to change them out all the time. I love getting intimate with my car...the world is a better place because of it!!!

I replace mine.

Agreed that you'd have to have some sort of adhesive to reattach the old ones - someone did that to my p-car before I bought it and it was a real crap job...I'd just as soon include new ones as the cost of replacing the pads.

If you have to change them for the track, just pull the calipers, then you can pull the whole pad with the spider out in once piece.

I was talking to a porsche trained race mechanic, and he told me the caliper bolts are not stretch, but Porsche's recommendation to replace them revolves around having a coating of locktite on the threads. Just reuse them with some locktite, so the cost will be zero.

I have not found an adhesive that will take the heat to allow reuse of spiders.

i have also found that I always get noise unless i use them, where its goes nice and quiet. So I always put them in.

cheers,

Mike

Two things I refuse to re-use: toilet paper, and brake pad dampers.

I first put my new pads on without the dampers and the squeaking became intolerable after 50 miles or so. I put the old ones back in without adhesive. It took most of the squeaking out. Enough that it is acceptable for a autocross/street car.

Try it with the old ones, and the you always have the option of spending the money for new ones.

Any recommendation for an adhesive? I'm in the same boat! Going to put mine back in, but need a name of adhesive.

Thanks,

I put new stock pads on my car after my last DE and re-used the old spiders. I sprayed the new pads with CRC Disk Brake Quiet and let it dry before installing. I have silent brakes now. The spiders were new when I last did stock pads a couple of years ago. I also used them for the DE with my PF97s. So, IMHO, re-using them is fine, as long as they are in good shape.

What size brake pad dampers do I need for a 1996 C2 coupe? Pelican has a 44 mm or 36 mm for the front and a 34 mm or 30 mm for the rear. Thanks!

Since the brake pad spiders/dampers fit into the bore of the pistons, you might want to try applying some anti squeal paste, when installing new brake pads...
