Default Rear Brake Flush, found plugged lines!

Hey Listers,

I just had my brakes flushed at the Porsche dealer, they told me that they were partly plugged, and it took a lot of flushes to clear the rear brake lines. No wonder they felt mushy!

I bought the 993C2S last March, could not find any record of a brake fluid change, maybe it was included in the 30K maintenance schedule?

So a note of caution to all... get that old fluid out of there!!!

Now there's a nice winter project :-)

Cheers,

Bert

I see this from time to time. Flush the hydraulics at least once a year!

Every winter, I change the oil, the tranny fluid, and the brake/clutch fluid.

Keeps her happy.

I don't know exactly why or what it is, but a waxy substance builds up in the brake system, and I've seen it pretty much clog the bleed nipples, so much I had to remove them to get any fluid to bleed out, even with plenty of pressure in the bleeder. I can imagine what it must do to the ABS controller...

I have seen the waxy substance build up as well. I recently had the brake reservoir replaced because of the amount of the buildup. I have yet to find a reasonable explanation, but it is a potential pita simple because of the damage potential.

My passenger inner rear was plugged. The power bleeder did not work at all on that one.
I eventually had to get a friend to press the brake pedal, and with enough pressure the gunk came right out.

From the p-car manual:

Important information about the brake fluid

Use only new brake fluid DOT 4.

Observe brake fluid quality.

The brake fluid DOT 4 Type 200 (change interval 3 years) used until now is no longer available via the Porsche Parts Service.

"Super DOT 4" brake fluid will be delivered instead. A 2-year change interval applies to this brake fluid.

Vehicles with brake systems containing the old type of brake fluid must be filled with Super DOT 4 the next time a brake fluid change is due.

This brake fluid is available under the following part number;
Container size 1 litre = 000.043.203.66
Container size 30 litres = 000.043.203.67

Miscibility of brake fluids:

The brake fluid DOT 4 Type 200 used until now is miscible with Super DOT 4. this means that Super DOT 4 can be used to top up the brake fluid-level in vehicles with brake systems containing the old type of brake fluid until the next time a brake fluid change is due. Both brake fluids are coloured amber.

I've never seen brake fluid go that bad except for in my slave cylinder line. It was horrible. Perhaps it didn't get flushed periodically like the brakes did.

Yessir. I do belts as well. Maybe overkill but not a ton of $$$ to do anyway.
