You'll hear from lots of people about who's "The Best" out here. There are many great mechanics, to be sure. However, some have traded on their good reputations by charging outlandish prices.

The trick here is to find the best mechanic at a FAIR price.

I humbly suggest a small Porsche specialty shop called "200 N. Motorworks", just outside of Beverly Hills on LaCienega Blvd. They are owned by two brothers who are both Porsche factory trained boys and who specialize in air-cooled Porsches. Their phone number is 310.358.5521 and ask for Mark. Tell 'em Philip in the C4S sent you.

Again, you'll hear from others about great shops, but I all but guarantee that those shops will charge much more for the same quality service. After your bad experience with Los Angeles Porsche Dismantlers, these boys will restore your faith in honest, good work.

No affiliation with the garage, just a very satisfied customer.

Where are you moving in LA? Convience is a factor for a mechanic. There are some great wrenches in Pasadena, South Bay, Orange county all over LA.

Steve Weiner has more knowledge of these cars in his pinky than I do in my entire body; there may not be a more knowledgeable person about all things Porsche on this site. He is also a great guy and I have the utmost respect for him.

I agree 100% with his assertion that Mr. Callas is arguably the best mechanic in the entire region. If I were having a engine rebuild done, or some other equally labor intensive and complex job where it might make the difference to have the best mechanic money can buy, he just might be at the top of my list.

However, I must respectfully also add that from my experience Mr. Callas' prices are, by far, the highest that I've seen. Some might argue that they don't mind paying the most money for the best mechanic in the entire city. But I think there's an even strong argument to be made for taking one's car to the second or third best mechanic in the entire city and getting the same quality work done, and saving 20%- 30%.

Hey Maz,

If you're in encino, you're not far from TRE Motorsports, located in VanNuys near the Budweiser plant. Dave and crew are great guys who really know their stuff!! Dave has done LOTS for Angelino porsche owners, and is well-known and highly respected in PCA/POC circles. More than just a knowledgable wrench, he's a great guy. Callas, of course, comes with superb cred. But for another superb mechanic, who has been in business forever, and enjoys the friendship and reputation of porsche owners all over the southland who also happens to be in your backyard ...Dave and crew are your guys. IMHO, of course ...and from a satisfied, long-term, repeat customer.

I think that Mark, Jon, and Dean at 200 N Motorworks are three of the best secrets in LA Porsche repair. I trust them completely.

Not only do they know what they are doing, but they're nice, humble, unpretentious guys. And they are also intelligent, educated guys (not just with cars but about the world in general.) Jon plays a mean ukulele and is a pretty good surfer, too.

I'll have to go meet a few of these folks. I am looking for someone who can confidently deal with an adjustable suspension setup. (PSS10 / RS bars / Tarret links). Besides the racy stuff, I prefer the sound of 200 N. Motorworks guys. There's nothing wrong with being friendly. Too little of it these days...

Also, do i need a front plate or not?

Technically, yes, although I've driven around the Bay Area for the past 10 years without one and have never been stopped because of it.

My car has never had one (where would it go?), and only ticketed for it once when parked in front of a hidden hydrant.

The guys at Motorworks can do the suspension no problem. They are Porsche trained (Jon has great stories of being a Japanese Hawaiian in a German run training program ), and they also worked for many years at Beverly Hills Porsche. They took a lot of BH's customers when they opened their own shop (James Woods is one of their customers.)

But you should consider Darin Nishimura, owner of West End Alignment for your suspension work. He's by far the best (maybe even in the country.) Usually a 2 week wait to get an appointment and a bit of a distance from Encino, but he knows his stuff. Lots of race prep experience and knows the 993 chassis. He's super precise and meticulous. Also he's a nice guy (and very smart) and prices are more than fair.

For no front plate it's a fix-it ticket in CA. And it all depends on where you are (LAPD have other things to do) and the circumstances. I had my bumper holes filled (along with bumperette delete) and use this as my solution:
http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/t...te-holder.html

You can leave it off and then "fix-it" (removing the fine and ticket) easily. Or put it on when in certain circumstances (like at LAX where you will get a no front plate fix-it ticket.)
