I leased an '07 550i after my 997 was taken back by Porsche (long story without a happy ending).
Overall, I liked the car. If a 911 is a scalpel cutting through twisty roads demanding that you pay attention, the 550i is a sledgehammer that will inhale miles of road without making you work for the pleasure. I wouldn't call the car numb at all, and with a 6-speed I bet it's tons of fun. Since it's a pretty big and heavy car (bordering on ponderous), it won't take to back roads very well. On the other hand, I couldn't think of a better sports-oriented car to take on a road trip with kids in the back that will let you have some fun.

I have a 545 6-speed sport and it is a very fast, relativity nimble sports sedan. I have 100K on it now and it has been very reliable as well. I hope you are getting a CPO one though, because I do know that repairs can be costly and the CPOs aren't demanding a disproportionately high premium. I get 24-28 MPGs on the highway at 80 MPH as well.
