Default Cherohala Skyway pics

Yesterday we enjoyed a nice drive on the Cherohala Skyway which connects NC with TN and is very close to the Tail of the Dragon. Just as scenic as the Blue Ridge Pkwy if you ever get the chance to visit this part of the country. A little twisty (but paved) 6 mile off-road of the Cherohala leads you to Bald River Falls, a must see. My wife took a nice shot as I crossed over the bridge.

Beautiful, great road, been on it several times on a motorcycle but never by car. Would love to do it in a 993. Did not know about Bald River Falls though.

One thing that annoyed me was coming around a blind curve and some idiot had parked his pick-up half on the road while he and his dogs were hunting bear in the woods. Had that happen several times.

Looks like you had a wonderful day drive.

Yes, there were many hunters in the pullouts. One dog ran out in front of a motorcycle that was doing 70+ and I was afraid to look. Fortunately the dog ran off in the nick of time. The biker hit his brakes but no way could he have avoided the dog. Whew! Overall though we didn't see any problems with the hunters. Only one car accident on the TN side, otherwise no law enforcement or other accidents. Last time we went there were motorcyclists down in numerous places. Just too much speed. There is publication put out at the visitor's center on the TN side which notated a biker getting clocked at 151 mph with his fellow bikers pegged at 127 mph trailing behind him. Believe it or not they were stopped and taken before a judge. The article didn't specify the punishment or fines.

Gorgeous pictures!

On the other hand:
Anyone who is hunting bear is by definition an idiot & deserves to get run over by an 18 wheeler!

Bears? Maybe so but I was thinking wild hogs. I should have asked because now I'm curious.

Looks great and what is the traffic like? It's a shame to be on such nice roads going 45 mph behind some tool in a minivan.

Very little 'regular' traffic. It is mostly enthusiasts with motorcycles and sports cars. There are a few extra 'leaf-lookers' this time of year but not bad at all. Of course the weekends are most crowded but nothing like the Tail of the Dragon yet. I say 'yet' because it was just 3 - 4 years ago during the early Spring that my wife and I could drive the entire distance (50+ miles) between Robbinsville, NC to Tellico Plain, TN without seeing a dozen cars. The road was completely ours. On clear days, the Cherohala is every bit the equal to the Blue Ridge Pkwy with elevations over 5000'. I know that isn't high for western folks but east of the Mississippi that is very high!

Never done it in the 993, but been up there on the bikes many times. One of the worlds best roads. Combine it with the Wya Bald for a perfect day!
