Default Targa Price Premium

I keep looking at Targas. Anyone know the total production numbers for each year? I don't see alot of them come up for sale and they seem to be the perfect Coupe/Cab combo but the prices I see asked are really high relative to Coupes and Cabs of the same condition/mileage, but of course examples are hard to find. Here's an example of one with lower miles and desirable colors with what seems like a 15K premium over a coupe or cab with the same numbers:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/ctd/1414482266.html

Here's another amazing one that's loaded: Full boxster leather, sports seats, carbon and stainless package but a Tiptronic. The Tip doesn't bother me but wouldn't that knock a few thousand off top dollar even for a car like this? Also, it's a '98 and I'm wondering if the painted split grill is factory or added later?

http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...c&aff=national

Anyone know either of these cars or have more info?

BOLA964 on this forum recently posted that he paid 34K for his Silver/Black car with 42K miles in May of this year (maybe he can chime in here) which seems fair but even a little high considering the recent post of an Arena C4S with low miles going for 39K. I know that was a great deal and 41K would have been more in line, but what should these Targa's be going for today in this market? Are they really commanding a big premium or are these two examples just flukes? Any thoughts?

JPP, I have the twin to the one in Campbell listed for $45,800 (literally, it is just 1 number off their vin #) . Mine is EXACTLY the same with all the EXACT colors and EXACT options including Litronics, LSD, heated seats, Hi-Fi etc.

I have owned mine for just over a year and bought from the original purchaser. 34k miles. All stock. No mods.

I was looking for a cab when I found it and was struck by its uniquness and bought it. I did not realize how rare they really are.

From Wiki:
Production Numbers: 1996:ROW 1980 US/Canada 462 1997:ROW 1276 US/Canada 567 1998:ROW 212 US/Canada 122 Total Production Run 993 911 Targa: 4619

Total US/Canada: 1,151

I don't know if they really command a premium, but I hope so.

There are ASKING prices, and then there are the prices that these cars actually fetch.

There can be a huge difference between the two, especially these days.....

AFAIK, the split rear grill was not standard on a Targa, unless there was an option code available via the Exclusive programme. Also, the wheels aren't 17" 2 piece Speedlines for the Targa.

Today's pricing given the economy is difficult to judge. Safe to say that few, if any cars, have gone up in value, most (like many other things) have gone down.

FWIW, my wife's 97 Targa Tiptronic was about $47K, 21K miles, single owner AZ car, an Exclusive Programme car (paint to sample exterior, interior to sample, etc) with enough option codes to make it difficult to all fit on a CoA. Quite striking car IMHO.

Is it worth $47K today? Definitely not, but since I'm not selling it, it is somewhat irrelevant.

I must admit that I do enjoy the Targa driving experience more than any other car I have, top closed or open. It is very unique.

Wow, beautiful car, I'm officially jealous. Exactly the same and only one number different? That's amazing. Thanks for the production numbers, it looks like they are pretty rare ...

Don't always listen to the numbers that folks pay for their cars. Each purchase is so varied from the next. Just so many factors. Stock, mods, options, paint work, mileage, maintenance history, the list goes on forever! Great deals are made and so-so deals are made including cars that are picked up for $27,000 that need $8,000 - $10,000 in repairs within 2 years. So what is the real purchase price? Even in bad times quality cars go for decent money. If you love that particular Targa and it checks out completely with full documentation, BUY IT!! Don't ask on a public car forum. Naysayers exist on every car forum I have belonged to so these are not people you want to take advice from. I have no idea why they own the cars they dislike or have no respect for. I own an American muscle car and a BMW and there are posters on the respective sites that say each is worthless and never will be worth anything, just high maintenace crap. The posters exist here too. Having said that, of course offer as low as possible without insulting the seller. You will find a median price hopefully. If not, keep looking but don't let $5,000 stop you from getting your dream car because someone else paid less. You pay crazy money for insurance, taxes, and everything rotten in life. Treat yourself for a change. Good luck!

I couldn't find any broken out numbers online or in Streather's book, but a couple of our Canadian brothers on this forum have said in the past that Canadian Targa's are really, really rare sightings. I imagine the percentage of Tip's would be about the same as Cab's ...

Ed, my freak brother! (I love your Avatar, by the way, it's perfect. A cinematographer could wait a lifetime for that shot).

I'm completely into the fact that this car has a Tip (flame suit on) and the Terra Cotta Boxster full leather/Carbon/Stainless/Sport-seat interior is just icing on the cake for me (Teflon spray applied).... It strikes me as a perfect relax and cruise machine with the light blasting in from the top all the time, open or closed. My S.O. totally busted me last night looking at the ad pictures and figured out it was an automatic with a special glass roof and uh-oh, I haven't heard the end of it since and I can see where this is heading ....
