Striped Bass - R.I.P.
Le Bec Fin - A paragon of dining ...once upon a time. Now not worth the time or the dime.

Is Dmitri's in Queen Village/South Street still popular?
It is a small Greek, Mediterranean and Seafood place. casual, BYOB, inexpensive, and great food.
It's been over 8 years since I left Philly though...

My lovely wife (a native) says La Familgia for Italian ...

"Definitely La Famiglia on Front Street. A little out of the way, not right on restaurant row (Walnut St), but a very short cab ride in Society Hill section of Center City. Its the best Italian I have ever had, including in Italy. I promise they won't be disappointed. And you have to order both a pasta and a meat course. Not that the portions are small, but you really don't want to miss out on either."

Dilullo Centro
1407 Locust Street
1215-546-2000

Some of the hottest restautrants in the City right now are the Stephen Starr Restaurants. Two that I would recommend would be Barclay Prime 237 S. 18th Street (215)-732-7560 & Alma De Cuba 1623 Walnut Street (215)-988-1799. His latest restautrant is Parc, a French Bistro in Rittenhouse Square.

Just so you can tell people you had a "real" philly cheese stake sandwich, head to Southside to Pat's and/or Genos.

I like Morimotos (of Iron Chief) on Chestnut, near Jefferson's Hospital in CenterCity.

Dmitri Grimes is one of the chefs that led the early tapas restaurant revival in Philly (and a good friend of mine). His food hasn't changed, but the crowd and lessened and he is no longer on the foodie's radar as he once was.

I re-read the OP and since you specifically targeted Italian, Mezza Luna will make you think you booked a flight to Tuscany instead of Philly! It is in South Philly.

Pcar hombre, you're right about Garces' restaurants. But they, like Starrs' places are as much about the "scene" as the food. Although they get high marks for both.

The one you couldn't remember is Distritos near Penn's campus. If anyone is going to Tinto, ask for the downstair's setting so you can hear yourself eat! BTW: Chifa is Peruvian/Asian/Latin. Yummm!

PS

I wish I knew as much about my car as I do the food scene in pretzeltown

Panorama is great italian and has one of the largest and most diverse wine cellars.
Tinto is one of our favorites much better than Amada
Continental midtown for a variety of excellent food and lots of 20 something single girls.
Buddakan: awesome aged beef and the pork dish.
Steak: Capital Grill or Barkley Prime

Second the Starr restaurants recommendation. Buddakan is fantastic. Pod on the Penn campus has very cool atmosphere.

The best pancakes in the world are served at Blue in Green.

If you're a beer fan, try Monk's -- over 500 beers, and great fries!

Every person from Philly knows that the best Italian is served at their gran's house.
