Question Bilstein PSS9 vs PSS10 for 993

I have a 1998 993 C2S (Manufacturing Date: 10/97)

I am looking for getting a set of Bilstein PSS9 or PSS10. I have a few questions:

1. I know PSS9 is the old model and I called Bilstein and they don't have it in stock anymore. Does anybody know any Bilstein distributor that they might still have some remaining stock?

2. Someone told me that PSS9 and PSS10 is just very similar and PSS10 just have one more damper setting. So, if I can get a set of PSS9 with a good discount, would it be a better choice?

3. Any recommendation of places that I can get a good deal for the PSS9 or PSS10?

4. Based on my research, the PSS10 part number for my car is F4-GM5-D268-H0. Is this correct? Does different model of 993 (e.g. C2, C2S, C4S, RS and etc) need a different part number?

Thanks a lot in advance. I really appreciate for any input/advice.

I heard from a few experts that the valving and dampening is superior in the 10s. I put the PSS10s in and am very happy.

Do a search for FD Motorsports or ViperBob for best pricing. Both of these outfits are excellent suppliers.

Yes, that is the correct part # for PSS10s

Also, the adjustment ***** on the PSS10s are in a much more sane location and you can actually feel detents when changing settings in the rear.
PSS9s are still available but are only about $120 less (based on what I see available)

Others will surely chime in, but you're better of with the PSS-10s than the 9s. There are other differences, but one noticeable one is, the 9s didn't have a strong 'click' in between settings, so it was hard to tell from feel where you were. They fixed that on the 10s. There are other differences as well.

I bought mine from site sponsor ViperBob and was happy with the service. Nice to keep it in the family. I didn't need the part number; you probably don't either, as I think it doesn't matter what model car you have.

If price is your only reason for wanting 9s, my advice is spend the few extra bucks and get the 10s. Also, I highly, highly recommend changing the sway bars 'while you're in there'. That's money well spent too. TRG sways are on my C4S with the 10s, and I couldn't be happier.

Once that's all done, you're gonna need a nice corner balance and alignment. You're lucky to live in Los Angeles, as the best alignment guy in Southern California is Darin at West End Alignment in Gardena. Google him and read the reviews; they speak for themselves about his talent. You'll probably hafta wait 2-3 weeks to get in to see him, so plan accordingly. Ask anyone on here, he's the BEST.

Good luck with this. You'll be amazing at how much a great new suspension transforms the car. Enjoy!

The PSS10s have been out for awhile now. I bought mine 9 months ago so I doubt hunting for new PSS9s will be too successful but who knows.

Don't buy old PSS9s without the extra threads. Someone can explain that better.

I suggest that you contact Steve Weiner too, he is a sponsor and a great asset to the 993 board.

I just got the PSS10s for my 1996 C4S.

The skimpy manual says adjust the height between 120mm and 140mm, any idea where in that range is the stock height ?

Thanks,

Patrick

PS: Anybody found a need to install an additional blue collor large washer to limit clunking sounds ?

IIRC you can't get stock height with them. I just searched for various pics on Rennlist to see what I liked best (RS, ROW, ROW Sport) and ended up going to the lower end of the ROW Sport height. You can adjust the height once they are on the car.

What mm length between 120mm and 140mm yielded for you the ROW Sport height ?

On a 993 ?

thanks,

Patrick

PS: The tech at the Bilstein supplier told me to get the 120mm to 140mm set before putting them on the car rather than adjust the heights after suspension is on the ground.

Here is a link to some info another Rennlister posted

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-height-2.html

I think i set the lock rings for the highest ride height to start but ended up moving them a hundred times once they were on the car. Definitely take your measurements from the factory reference points. I think I ended up at the low end of ROW Sport approx. 134/120 IIRC. If I had to do it again I might put the locking rings in the middle of the range to start. I think 2 turns = 1mm in height change. Perhaps somebody will chime in if I'm wrong on that.

When I installed mine I did not find a linear correlation between number of turns and ride height. It was my 1st time installing PSS10s and I am certainly no expert.

With A LOT of trial and error I got the ride height where I wanted it.

Have been searching myself, Tire Rack has PSS10s for $2479 (FD is slightly cheaper but with the 10% CA sales tax it becomes more expensive). Another data point come from my friend who is a wholesaler and says he can't beat the Tire Rack price. About to pull the trigger myself so let me know if you find them cheaper elsewhere.
