Default Help! My Tiptronic has a major probem.

I am soooo bummed. I was accelerating up a hill to our home when I noticed that the RPM's started climbing but the car was slowing down. No other noises, no other indication of an issue. The car just continued to slow down to a crawl. The transmission would engage very slightly,,, just enough to move the car forward about 5 miles an hour. If I tried to accelerate the RPM's would climb but only a slight increase forward movement. Reverse seems to be fine.

I know it is going to cost me big.. Any Idea's what it could be. Could it be the Torque converter? Or rear differential?

I have never heard of a tipronic going bad. I am sure they do, but I have never seen it posted here. The term "Bullet Proof" is often used. Keep us posted and good luck.

If reverse is OK then your TC is most likely good.

Sounds like a solenoid...hopefully not costly - I would call your favorite repair shop (Hergesheimer's?) and schedule an appt...

I have never heard of one going bad either. If you do need one though I have a good one with 45K miles I would sell for a song :-) Also have the torque converter but since it works in reverse it's probably OK. It's been a long time since I drove a tip, will it let you start out in 2nd? Also, try to access the filler nut to smell/see the fluid. Good luck!

I hope you are wrong, but I fear you are right. I am clinging on to the solenoid idea!

First thing would be to check the ATF fluid level. AT's are rely on hydraulics to apply pressure to clutch packs -- without it, they slip.

Sounds like low fluid to me, too. Anyway, years ago I had a Chevy with an automatic that did what you described and that was what was wrong.

Agree with Chris, probably just fluids. Which signals something else wrong. The Porsche tip is completely sealed unit, no dip stick. So either you have a major leak somewhere, or you recently had a service done and the fluids was not filled properly. It is quit tricky filling fluids in these tips, as the tranny needs to be in operating temperature and fluids needs to be filled from the side of the transmission with a special coupler.

Have you noticed any drips or leaks on the floor? any chance your transmission was serviced recently?
