Help! My Tiptronic has a major probem.

Thanks Chris,
No, the fluid levels were fine and color was perfect. They opened it up yesterday and did not find any metal shavings etc.. in the pan (good news!). I don't have the specific details yet, but I was told that a code popped (I do not remember the code) and that led to some sort of pressure sensor valve that was suppose to register in the range of .08 to 1.8 but registered .03? They could not find this part anywhere here in the U.S. and so it was ordered from Germany. The part is expected in about 10 days.
I am a bit concerned that this may not fix the problem and with so few tiptronic problems there is not a lot of expertise in these transmissions. I also don't want to start buying and swapping out parts (solenoids, TCU, etc.) to see if that may or may not fix the problem. I guess I just have to wait for the part and see if it works.

I recently spoke to my Porsche Specialist to discuss issues with Tiptronics in 993 and cost of rebuilding if necessary. He thought for a minute and couldn't answer as in many years of dealing with them has never had to do a rebuild. I'm sure they are breakable if you try hard enough but general use is extremely unlikely to completely fail. Sounds like time for a tilt tray and off to the OPC or other for diagnosis. Best of luck mate.

I remember the post Geolab, my problem is a bit different in that the car only idles forward when put into 1st or 2nd gear no matter what the Rpm's. I am just beginning to understand the true nature of this challenge to repair the Tiptronic transmission.
Bottom line...because "the Tip" so rarely breaks down, no one knows how to repair it.
So,,I am forced to wait for the part to arrive from Germany to see if that solves the problem. In the mean time does anyone know of a Southern California repair shop that has some expertise on the Tiptronic transmission (just in case)?

Only thing that stuck with me to DIY it, is a VW tool to center the ATF pump to the whole core.
I can find it nowhere. it is in the 993 workshop manual
There is one great alternative to consider if worse comes to worse.
I have checked with about 15 repair shops in France, UK, belgium and germany for quotes...
The cheapest alternative was ZF.
Call them and ask for a part exchange price, I am practically sure they are the cheapest, AND they will explain
to you that their exchange tip boxes have totally NEW internal transmission components converter and NEW differential. I was quoted 2.6k from ZF
I chose another alternative:
What I did was I bought a complete 1998 engine and box in one piece.
I will exchange with my engine and box, and have all the time to rebuild my original engine and
I will DIY my box.
If you need anything let me know

So, here is the latest,
The part arrived from Germany and...... of course it didn't work. My mechanic was at a loss and could not find anyone that works on the Tip Transmission in Southern California. To make matters worse, he is going to Germany for 2 weeks this coming Tuesday. Then came 356Racing to the rescue! He mentioned that he had a spare Tip Transmission and TCU that he had pulled from a salvage car and he would be happy to sell them to me. Because of the time constraints with my mechanic leaving, I ran up to Phoenix yesterday (road trip!) and picked up the tranny and the TCU from 356Racing. He would not take any money from me until we installed it and it worked. Unbelievable. What a quality individual! My personal gratitude goes out to 356Racing!
I will give everyone an update on Monday night or Tuesday.

Agree with Chris, probably just fluids. Which signals something else wrong. The Porsche tip is completely sealed unit, no dip stick. So either you have a major leak somewhere, or you recently had a service done and the fluids was not filled properly. It is quit tricky filling fluids in these tips, as the tranny needs to be in operating temperature and fluids needs to be filled from the side of the transmission with a special coupler.
Have you noticed any drips or leaks on the floor? any chance your transmission was serviced recently?

Got my TIP back in 07,during the test drive with the prev. owner everything worked fine, trans shifting well manual or auto mode...
Got the car home trans will shift only in auto mode!
Car on ramps, turns out the trans fluid was low altough no leaks detected.Changed the trans filter, cleaned the pan, magnets, put fresh trans fluid everything works beautifully three years later the fluid looks still sparkling ruby red. These transmissions are built to last if serviced properly.
This was my experience I hope you getting it resolved as well.Good luck!
