That's a true statement. However, it will still exceed 140 with this gearing. I would have never seen top speed in the US. I guess what I'm saying is that at the speeds I drive on the street, the close coupled ratios are more driveable and the acceleration seems to be better. This is a great mod among the limited items we have available to actually improve performance on these cars. IMO.

here's a comparison of all the manual trans fited to the 993 series cars, w/ a few customs thrown in
To me for primarily for track use and some street driving the g50/30 is the nuts
I seriously doubt that a stock 993 can see it's theoretical top speed anywhere but from an air drop, esppecially in US /20 form, the early RoW /21 was somewhat better in this regard but the US trans was strictly a bone thrown to the US gov't mandated fuel ecomomy standards

Drifting
Precisely. There is a difference between cruising at a light load on level ground versus putting your foot in it. It amounts to the load on the motor. There is nothing wrong with lower rpm and a light load, within reason.

WRT to top speed my non-VR car with the US transmission does indeed reach 165 mph/265 km/h at ~6150 rpm (17 inch wheels). That is, on the Autobahn without an air drop. Measured with GPS. I think any NA 993 with either G50/21 or G50/20 should reach 165 to 170 mph, if not, there's probably something wrong.

I love the table and the tech info. Good stuff--thank you very much.
As for the G50-20 US gearing, I think it's a practical, real-world set-up for real driving on real roads. If my car was a full-time racer, I'd be changing the gears all the time to match the needs of each track. My car isn't a full-time racer. It's a driver that I hope will see occasional use for track days, DE, etc.
My daily round-trip commute includes two 20-mile stretches of uninterrupted freeway miles. I can set the cruise control at 2600 RPM and cruise down the interstate at a GPS measured 73 MPH. I like that.
I also have the luxury of driving a lot of winding country roads around the southern burbs of Charlotte metro and I never have a problem finding the gear I want. What could be better?

If you like your car stock and are at all aggressive, beg or steal a ride in a car w/ a short gearbox. There is a night and day difference
It can be debated all day how short to go and where to have what drop, but they are totally different cars w/ properly geared transmissions

@ Duckman - I want to second Bill on the shorter gears. I have two 993s, one with G50/20 US and the other is custom from Rothsport in Oregon. In combination with RS clutch and flywheel and Steve Weiner Chip, the car feels "40 hp faster". There is incredible pull from low RPM to the limitter! If you ever have a chance to drive this combination, you made your next step on the slippery slope.
@ Bill - I have a receipt in front of me of the Rothsport upgrade and you might be able to help me with what this might be (who it compares to the values of your table):
95030290121 1st Gear mainshaft assembly w/splined 2nd
G50 2.25 2nd Gear set
G50 1.579 3rd Gear set
G50 1.2826 4th Gear set
G50 1.083 5th Gear set
6th gear is the "old" 5th gear.
