Oil cooler blower under driver fender will not turn off
Hello Rennlist, (newbie here).
I have a 993 (96 model) that has a problem with the 'Auxiliary Oil cooler blower' which blows warm air out of the front underside of the drivers fender. Even when I just turn the ignition (without firing the engine) from cold, the fan just kicks in and will not stop, ever.
does anyone have any idea what the problem would be?

Could be a "Welded" relay contact, pull the relay and pop the cover of the relay and see if you see any corrosion on the relay contact point, clean it with a fine sand paper and see. Or just buy a new relay.

Where would I find or get to the relay? I have the workshop manual and the PET CD, but not much experience with this kind of problem.

so, this is the oil cooler.
Did you recently get this car?
It is possible someone unplugged the oil temp sensor. That keeps the fan running full time and on high.

Yes, I believe it is the Oil Cooler. I have had the car for many years, it doesn't get driven much, but no, nobody could have unplugged the oil temp sensor. This problem developed after a very long car trip, (mainly through days of heavy rain if that's possibly relevant). I found the oil temp sensor in the engine bay, but they are not unplugged or loose.

the oil temp sensor can be found by removing the headlight assy. Easy to unplug on a track day, for example.
Here is a pic from Robin's site: http://p-car.com/diy/fan/6.jpg
You may want to try swapping the oil cooler relay and the A/C cond fan relay (fuse box).
Your relay may have failed as Robin mentioned above.

Im with Robin, probably a failed relay (R04)... Id swap it with R23 (horns).... if the relay is shorted closed, you will know it pretty quick...... :-)
edit: Relays are under the hood on your drivers side (right)....

I found out about the delay issues from Ferraris, apprently the Ferraris burn up a lot of F1 pumps because the wiring for the relay were under rated (typical of stupid Ferrari people) and causes the relay to "weld" together and run the pump continously and cause the pump to over heat and burn up. $10K repair from a $30 relay.

I looked at the relays, but they are quite different in terms of the number of connectors, and don't fit into each others socket. is there another compatible one that I can try?

The adjacent relays for AC and oil rads in the CE panel are identical ( usually have a 'R04' designation on top of case), and can be swapped.
EDIT: correction for Alzheimers moment ... these two relays have a '1' on the case top --- R04 and R14 are the CE sites for the two identical relays.

I changed the relays over today, R04, R24, and this time no Oil Cooler Fan came on, but a fan came on in the engine bay (left side) which was sucking air into a black box with a grille on it. so, has the swapped (faulty) relay made that fan behave like the 'oil cooler fan' in that if the relay is faulty, the fan kicks in?
