I just bought an Actron CP9180. If was inexpensive ($132) and very user friendly. I used it on the 993 and the Boxster S.
Here is a link to the eBay seller I bought from;

Any OBDII reader will work. Some just show you the code and some will give you a brief explanation of what the code means. You can aleways drop by an AutoZone and they can punch the code in their computer and give you more detail and probable suspects to check.

I'm not 100% sure on this, (as in not verified myself) but I read somewhere that if the car (any car) has an OBDII plug an OBDII reader should have no trouble reading it. Even if the car is OBDI. Something about OBDII readers being backward compatible.

I got one of these a while ago and love it. It's a little more $$$ but it's completely customizable and you can get a GPS add-on for it as well. (not affiliated, etc. etc.) It reads plenty of signals, logs data, performance measurments, clears MILs, etc. I particularly like using it to show speed, rpm, throttle position and braking all on one screen. Great data to log for track analysis. I find it very useful and it fits nicely when you tuck the mounting brace into the ash tray. That way it's not mounted up on the windshield and right at your fingertips.

That's not correct. Many of the late '95 993s had the OBDII connector
but were still OBDI only compatible, and as such were not backward
compatible with OBDII scanners. So don't waste your money if the
vehicle is OBDI by buying an OBDII scanner.
