Default Why are you selling your low mileage C2S or C4S?

I was just wondering why so many are selling their low mileage C2S or C4S cars. Is it because you're tired of the car? Looking to get something newer? Or is this the usual trend?

My car is just about to turn 65K on it. I don't drive it everyday maybe twice a week if that. All freeway driving, purchased it with 34k 6/19/03 6yrs ago. I would love a 997GT3 but who wouldn't. I'm totally content with my 97' C2S and I plan on keeping the car for the long haul.

Unless the GT3 prices drop way down.......Keep dreaming.

Yeah, I just posted similar over on the 964 forum re: seemingly underfunded owner seeking cheap car.

Know what? I wouldn't want a GT3. You're going to drive it where, exactly. We're cruising down to San Jose yesterday in Karen's '06 325 sedan, and there in the right lane is a 997 C2 w/ GT3 aerokit going all of 60. (That is NOT to say you hop in the 911 and are foot to the floor from the time it's warmed up..........) So you've got an expensive, depreciating piece of three-dimensional art that is pretty much useless for its intended purpose on congested, patrolled American roads.

So back to why the low mileage owners want to sell? Same reasons as always, I'm sure. The lust for "new" or different. Looking at the cars as nothing more than an asset, and trying to time the market. Being held hostage to the low miles and wanting a similar car you can actually enjoy. The car doesn't meet expectations when an Accord can accelerate about the same. Etc. etc. Hasn't really changed much over the years.

Race911 pretty much hit the nail on the head! The most common reasons being given to me are "I just don't drive it enough to justify having it" and "I don't want to tinker anymore and these cars need to be tinkered with...I'm going to buy a 996 Turbo or a 997"....

I just picked up my 993 C4S and would prefer it over all the modern cars. I am a little biased but this is the most beautiful Porsche ever built (just forget the GT3 RS ...) and I have 2 friends working at Porsche that completely agree. This is a timeless beauty and will be a keeper. At some point not to far from now, values will go up again.

+1

The good thing about it I can always go completely stock if I really wanted to. I have the all the original components. if I ever needed to sell the car. By then hopefully the values will go back up.

The car in the garage means more than the $$$ in the bank which is why I'm not selling my '97 C2.

And then you find out a GT3 isn't "all that" once you get it to the track. Is it fast? Yes. But what percentage of the ownership can exploit even the last 5% of the car? I can easily run with all but 2 or 3 of the ones out here with my basically stock RSA. And you've tied up 50-100% of what you've got in a good 993.

Johannes' article in the latest Excellence pretty much sums it up, though the comparison is GT3RS/997 Cup/Spec 911.

Stop that! You're making too much sense.

I think the reason why people sell, or buy, cars is for the matter of change. Whether its economical or just because, people make changes in their lives.

I'm thinking of selling mine now. the reason is mostly that its a great car, but I am a little bored with it using it as a driver, and (rational or not) - its still way too nice condition to use as a DE/track day car. There is no way I can justify having a second sports car for that purpose but I really want to go in that direction - my son is 19 and in the area and we could have a lot of fun doing that. So if I sell, I'll get a much less expensive car I can use at the track and have more fun with that activity and enjoy it with my son. I'm at a crossroads though - if I keep it I will move it in that direction - car value will fall but the value to me will increase and I'm OK with that too. Nothing new, as a street car really appeals any more than this classic car with its about perfect street driving and looks.

Default Kept 1995 993 Cab and sold 2003 C4S 996

I recently had a decision to make about the 993 and kept it over my 996 C4S which was a beautiful looking car.....loved the all weather handling and extra power, but in the end the sexier lines of the 993, the build quality and the aircooled engine made the decision easy.....the 993 has 39K and the 996 had 80 K, so that also came into play....the 996 had 3 RMS and 2 IMS issues and was now out of warranty which also influenced the decision to keep the 993..............The 993 has also been bulllet proof and the value has actually gone up the last few years and this will probably continue, plus the car drives so darn nice.....the 996 was plummeting and I got 35 K on a trade-in for another car and that was lucky......

I go through this process at least annually. Frankly, I do not have the time to enjoy the car, which is pathetic in some ways, but other hobbies and work and fun stuff beckon. My kids are of the age where every weekend is a long slog to some soccer tourney, and we try to go as a family unless they are playing in different states (more and more), and, frankly, that is fun to do. But the 993 is not the car for that, destroyed cleats, sinky and muddy teenagers, and the dog and his water bowl. So weekends are shot, work is hell, etc. I drive it enough to keep it in good shape, and love looking at it, and really don't mind any of the routine maintenance I do just because I should. But I don't use it like I "should."

So should I sell it (I have not yet, obviously), or keep it because I just love the thing? So far the nonsensical and emotional has won out. When I drive it it makes me happy, you know? So I have not sold it. I guess happiness can't be overrated or a price placed on it.

But still, I don't use it and sometimes change for the sake of change is good, that money could finance other toys or something practical (yeah, that stuff is good, too). I guess change can be good, even if it only makes you realize what you had... So I ponder once in a while, too.
