Dear God - Not another Oil Thread!

As Steve W said,
Additive is OK for engine break-in, meaning new components and a few miles/hours on the engine. Of course break-in procedures and opinions vary, but you get the gist, it's for a brand new engine. After that, an oil with a good ZDDP package is all you need. Acceptable level is above 1000 ppm, if I remember correctly. Brad Penn, Amsoil, and Mobil 1 for V-twins 20-50 grade, and possibly Rotela T syn in 15w-40 were acceptable. I am sure there are more, but these are what I remember. Redline was one of the acceptable ones, but recently I remember reading that they had some fishy stuff going on, the additive components and levels (ppm) they quoted did not match what was actually in the oil. You may want to do you own research and maybe the best thing is if you are partial to an oil, have it analyzed. What you've been using might just be OK.

ZDDP, in the proper range, is fine but it's important to remember why the mandate was issued to reduce ZDDP, namely, to reduce catalytic converter premature failure. If you add ZDDP Plus or any other additive to oil (that already has a ZDDP pkg.) which raises the level too high, not only are you wasting your money, you may well create another problem downstream.

Gentlemen, I know this has been posted before, however, it's worth repeating ...
look for Synthetic Oils that have over 1000 ppm Zinc and Phosphorus that are approved for Porsche Oil/Air cooled engines ...

FWIW, the chart which Ted posted is one factor that helped me choose the M1 5w/40 Truck oil (two rows below the venerable 15w/50). And from what I've read (again, for what that's worth), the additives package for that oil is supposed to be good stuff.
Overall, I am betting on what I've learned reading, the numbers I find like those on this chart, Mobil's reputation, my regular change interval of 6-7K miles (and no more track use for her), and overall cost, stir well, and the 5w/40 is my solution. Hope I'm right
