Default Urgent - tac tac noise from the engine

Hi,

a few minutes ago as i was driving, the engine started making a tac tac tac noise that follows the rpm - it sounds like an old vw beetle.

No oil pressure issue nor heating nor change in power.

What can it be ? Is it safe to drive further?

Thanks,
pierre

Sounds like a collapsed lifter from your description. Open the engine compartment and use a long screw driver as a stethoscope to find the origin... if you get more pronounced sound from one of the valve covers or heads, that's probably your culprit. I changed them all last year at about 60K miles because one collapsed. Probably good to fix it before driving much... you don't want the lifter to impact the valve stem too much and deform it.

Does the tac tac noise frequency change with changes to RPM? If it does, than it is probably 99% is the lifter.

When the car is getting near the time to have the top end rebuilt, don't the lifters start chattering?

One thing have nothing to do with the other, 993 lifters fail all the time does not signal a bad guide.

The noise is 100% linked with rpm

i have done the top end 2 years ago and have now 75k

I would think 15 miles of gentle driving would be OK... just avoid high RPMs, WOT, you know, the fun stuff! What say the real 993 engine experts?

My car is doing the same thing and I suspect it is a lifter. BUT, it quits tic-tac'ing around 1800 RPM. Is this common for collapsed lifters?

Another vote for lifters. VW Beetle sound to a T. That's exactly how mine sounded when they went bad.

Mark
That's usually an early sign of a failing lifter.
As the engine rpm goes up there are more oil pressure so more oil is getting pumped to the litters keeping it from collapsing.

Hey Robin,
I missed this response a few weeks ago. Thank you for the insight.
