Cool Cité de l'Automobile

I few weeks ago we visited the French National Car Museum in Mulhouse, Alsace. I expected to see nothing but a collection Le Cars; was I ever wrong! It was a fabulous museum. I almost hate to say it, but I enjoyed it more than the Porsche Museum. If you travels take you to Alsace I highly recommend it. Here is the link and some photos.

Thanks, Floodj, for the great pictures. In the fifth shot, upper right, do you know the make/model of the dark blue four-door sedan? It looks somewhat like the US-made 1949-1951 Mercury, right down to the suicide rear doors. You can see the Mercury here:

Despite their poor mechanical engineering skills, their design departments worked overtime to produce some timeless classics. Thanks for the listing.

Is the Bugatti Royale genuine? I ask because a replica was built in the UK and exhibited at the Donington Motor Museum however, its not there anymore.

I recall from a long ago magazine article, that there were two Royales at a museum in France. Going from memory, another was in the Ford collection, Bill Harrah had two, and one was in the Briggs Cunningham collection. That totals to the six known cars, although there was a rumoured seventh.

Here's a website I found on a recent re uniting of the cars, and with details on the replica:

I note the Coupe Napoleon is in the Schlumpf Collection.

They have 2 genuine Bugatti Royale: Coupé Napoléon (1929) and Limousine (1933).

We really enjoyed the museum. It is indeed the old Schlumph Museum, but is now the French National Car Museum. I was reading about it either the Schlumph brothers donated it to France or the government of France took, but that really didn't matter to me--the cars were fabulous.

Bobby T, I am not sure. I didn't read a lot of the cards in front of the cars. I cropped the original so you could get a better look.

We now move through museums pretty quickly. I have attached a photo showing why. We were okay with the rocks until he wanted to throw some. Then he got strapped into the stroller.

Yes the Royales are real. The one here was Ettore's personal car. There were two of them in the collection. I have attached photos of the other one.

You definitely need to take a trip to France! And if you wife is not interested in seeing the car museum there are fabric and wallpaper design museums in Mulhouse also. If museums are you justification to go to France there are few nice one in Paris too...

There were 5 of them in Goodwood in 2007. I think just one was missing from the World total!

This musuem has always been on my list of must-see places. The cars were collected by the Sclumph brothers over many years in secret. They quitely bought cars all over the world. They were in the textile business, which probably explains the other museums in the area. They apparently used creative accounting practices in the process and ran afoul of the French equivalent of the IRS. These folks ended up seizing the company as well as the collection. The collection was turned into a musuem and has been a hugh hit. The brothers fled to Switzerland and spent the rest of their lives trying to reclaim their property.

They have the largest collection of Bugatti's in the world as well as some other priceless cars. There is a Mercedes-Benz GP car, a W125 I think and the Talbot-Lago GP car is shown here. Thank you for sharing.
