Well, I've had some work done recently by Mike Callas at Rennsport and also started talking to him about the paint. He does the disassembly and another shop (G&S) does the actual paint prep and spray, but haven't finalized anything with him yet. Seems the price is in the $6500 to $7000 range.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. As you can see, prices are all over the place and seem to be very location dependent. Anyway, thanks for all the discussion.

I'm honestly very curious -- what do you get for $18K? Almost the entire cost of a paint job is labor. At $50/hr, that's 360 hours of labor. At 40 hours a week, that's nine weeks -- over two months -- of full-time work on a single paint job, and you presumably were starting with a non-rusty, non-wrecked 993. What were you paying for?

The only $18k paint jobs I've seen were dozen coat candy or pearl paint with full jambs, engine bay, with zero orange peal. Show quality stuff only. To spend $18k and get cracking paint on the bumper is an absolute FU in my opinion. That shop deserves to lose the business.

Me personally, I'd never spend what a real nice E36 M3 costs in paint for a car I intend to drive.

I got a $8k quote to have my 05 S500 painted in a color change pearlescent white. Shop was well respected. They would have done the job for $5500 if i would have stuck with the same color.

I had the entire car painted, 10 coats, all jams, turbo tail, even had the trim around the windows removed and powder coated. and the finish is show room finish. A black car shows everything and I did not want to see any orange peel of any kind. They had the car for 3 months. Call me crazy maybe but you only live once. The pleasure I get out of detailing my car is priceless. And then I get to drive it

You paid $18,000 for a paint job that was sub-par, and that the shop didn't fix their sub-par work?!? If that's the case, you most certainly didn't get what you paid for. I'm glad you get joy every time you detail your car. Personally, I'd be pissed I paid $18,000 for a paint job that was performed incompetently and not fixed.

I think that these prices must be dependent on your location.

Four years ago I paid in the ball park of $4K to have my former 944 repainted in the original Stone Grey Metallic. This included body work on the rear fender where the car had been sideswiped and repair of all door dings, as well as full badge delete. The guy who did it , Todd Hood in Tucson, was recommend by my Mercedes mechanic and I saw a vintage Ferrari that he had painted. His work was flawless and the car looked beautiful. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

In retrospect it was foolish to pay more than the value of the car for a paintjob but at the time my son and I thought we would keep it forever. Within three years we replaced it with a 911.

Have followed Rhino's car and this is a big +1, as it is truly unique. BTW, $50 labor costs were years ago. Try $85 up.

Just as a point of reference. Liberty Mutual Insurance will go as high as $48 paint/body and $26 materials. Highest price I found in Seattle was $52 paint/body and $28 materials. I didn't ask then but what does that mean? Do they charge $26/per hour for materials? And not what the material's cost as a whole?

Am enjoying the info on this thread. Will add a few comments: If you've never spent much time in a paint & body shop, get ready for a mild shock. It's dirty, dusty work (until it gets to the paint booth). You'll want to ensure that the interior, trunk and engine compartment are well protected unless it's a total restoration in which everything is removed. (As mentioned, the more work you do, the less it'll cost you.)Always get everything defined on the front end, preferably in writing...don't leave it to chance or "I thought you said..." Plan on going by at least once a week to check on progress. If the shop knows you care, they'll care. Don't count on it being done when promised. If it is, it'll be a miracle! If you're not in a hurry and have a good relationship with the owner, sometimes you can negotiate a reduced rate by letting them work on your car as a "time filler" when they're at a standstill with other jobs. Keep in mind that good paint jobs come from 99% preparation/finishing and only 1% actually shooting paint.

I had my 97 c2s painted by a top 3 shop here in vancouver, every panel but the roof was painted. Front and rear were ICBC, I did the middle to clean up some little bits. Was 6Kish total for paint.
