If you get a Porsche there is the 'emotion factor'. It is not a rational decision and by having said this, you need to listen to your soul. You might need to compromise with some things after this decision but every minute with the car will make you very happy and not thinking "why didn't I do ..."
I have a 993 and will keep it. I am thinking about picking up a "cheap" coupe for DD / track action during the slump as a second car and I are still undecided between 993 / 996 and 997. I think the 996 will fit my bill best.
You really aren'yt comparing like with like. Cost of the two is pretty different, as will be running cost. Driving experience is also quite different. From a reliability perspective, the 993 is pretty bullet proof (more so for such an old car), I still have my 993 C4S alongside my 997 RS.
Honestly, the 997 GT3 RS (or any wide body 997) is about the only modern Porsche in my eyes to match the beauty of the 993 AND exceed the driving experience of the 993. But the 993 is a wonderful car for what it is... hence I will never sell it.
