Default tonneau/sunshade for cabriolet

Does anyone know of an inexpensive tonneau cover to avoid having to raise the top to shade the interior?

I had a 1971 Mercedes 280sl roadster that had a nice cover that was made by a company in California. It was made of a very light material that covered the outside of the windshield and had velcro hold-downs that looped around the side mirrors and door handles.

Best regards,
Don

I have seen them on the older cabs 83-89, but never on a 964 or 993. IIRC they snapped to the dash as well. That was OEM there may be an aftermarket application available.

I understand that the factory position is to not leave the top down to avoid excessive wear and tear. Am I being over cautious on that?

I've been thinking of ordering one from these guys: http://www.autochic.com/porsche.html

Maybe we should get a GB??

I have an OEM cover that I put on my cab any time it is parked outside for more than 10 minutes. It is a 45 second job putting it on. I highly recommend it.

I have had my top down for the last two years. I've put it up maybe three times just to clean it or some other reason, then it goes right back down. No issues and no wear. I have converted it to manual operation so there are no issues with the cables or motors.

1) Had my top down on my 1983 SC Cab for almost the entirety of the 20 years I had it. Top was in great shape when I sold it. Also had the tonneau cover Mike mentioned, and it did snap to the dash.
2) Saw a cover like Don and Doug mentioned on a 1996 Cab - was pretty neat.
3) Am in for a GB if one develops.

So no creasing along the folds of the canvas (or the clear plastic window) after the top has been down for extended periods of time.
I personally have been afraid to leave the top down overnight, but I would love to be able to put the boot on and leave it down for awhile.

I bought one from a place in NJ out of Pano. It was about $70. Performance parts also sold one.
Nice SL. This was my 64- 230SL I sold last year.

Based on other's experiences (especially Chuck W's comments over the past few years on this subject), I have stopped worrying about leaving the top down constantly. Now that I live in a nice sunny (hotter than hades!) climate, the top hasn't been up since I drove out of the RUF center almost 2 months ago.

The concept of a tonneau sounds great! I'd be in for a Group Buy!

I contacted Auto Chic regarding a Group Buy and apparently there are some trade shows going on right now so no immediate feedback, but someone should get back to me next week.

Beautiful 230, Jim! I loved my 280, but it was no Porsche. More of a "touring" car in comparison, don't you think?

Don

I wonder if Performance doesn't buy theirs from AutoChic? As to leaving the top down, over the years I have obeyed the Porsche edict but have seen people do both. I am aware of a few wear tears in the fabric of the tops of people who have left them down for prolonged periods of time. Whether that would have happened any way I do not know but I'd rather be safe. IMHO of course.
