Default How to get a second key made.....

I know this might sound like a dumb question, but when I purchased my 993, they only had 1 key. Well over the weekend, I thought I lost my only key (though my wife found it ) I'd like to get a second key made for the car but don't know if I should just purchase from the dealer or how to proceed. I don't have the immobilizer, so what do I need?

TIA!

Andy

Order a blank spare off Ebay - they have a bunch of cheap ones that run only a couple of bucks. Or you can get an OEM blank. Once you have it, go to a locksmith and they'll take care of it.

Unfortunately, you cannot start the car without the immobiliser. You'll have to get a second fob and get it programmed, or pehaps you get the car programmed to recognize the immobilizer. It doesn't do much good to be able to open the car with the key when you can't start it.

my vehicle is a '95, I don't have an immobilizer on the vehicle. All I'm looking for is a second key, in case I lose my only one.

Note that some of the "keys" that are sold are just the metal shaft and not the key head. As you probably know you can get either a traditional key head or a switchblade head (which I believe was original), both of which will fit on the metal key shaft, so be sure the eBay seller is including either the regular or switchblade head.

There are three kinds of "keys" on eBay. One is just a shaft. You can't really use it by itself. Second is a key with a plastic rectangular head. About $20-25. Will work fine. Third is a full key with light inside and little Porsche crest outside. About $50. The same key that you currently have.

If you are interested, you can also install a keyless entry system in the car very easily. Probably best $30 I've spent in my 993.

Your local dealer can order you a key from Atlanta, but you need to prove your ownership. Doesn't take long and I think its around $100 bucks.

Soap,
I ordered a standard key from Sunset - black plastic head with an opening. Then I took it to the local Ace Hardware and had it cut for $1.50.

This after the nearest Porsche dealer took one look at it and said, "We can't cut those!"

Horse****.

Ordering from the dealer via proof of ownership will give you a cut that matches the original tumblers. In most cases, the tumblers are probably worn, as are the key that is used most often.

Both avenues should work fine. The local hardware store route is cheap enough that you can afford trial and error a few times.

Andy, I have an extra basic blank key I can mail you. (It's a keyblank with head, all metal)
Just let me know if you want it (freebie).

FWIW, these key blanks are Ilco P05
I haven't found a HW store that carried this blank.
