Rear center reflector--unused bulb sockets?
Today I pulled out the turn signal/brake lights and center reflector to clean behind them, and discovered two unused spaces for bulb sockets. They are just inboard of the backup lights on each side in the center reflector. PET shows another 21W bulb (same as taillight and backup light) at that location. Are these used as taillights in some markets? Has anyone hooked them up on a US car?
I also found that the three brackets holding the center reflector were poorly mounted. The factory used pop-rivets that were apparently too short, and easily pulled loosed. I replaced all of them with 3/16 x 1/2 rivets, and the mounts seem much more secure.

On the BMW, there are two unused sockets that are easily converted to additional brake lights from the not used rear fogs.
I wonder if that would keep people away from stopping so damn close!
Do you have a picture?

Hi Bruce,
Sorry, no picture. They are just holes with a blank bayonet plug, similar to the backup light, but not the same as the brake light socket, although looks like the same diameter.

Not for nuffin' -- but I've noticed that too -- people stopping WAY TOO CLOSE to my rear ! (Then getting on their cell phones, or rotating the selector on their ipod, or telling the kids to shut-up behind them, etc.). So, naturally, I've learned to leave a LOT of space between me and the car in front - so that - when I see this stoooopid-*** behavior in my rear-view mirror -- I stealthily just pull up a foot or so -- in case ditzoid, behind me, forgets to hold pressure on the brake pedal.
Aaaaah, give me European driving any day (I'm from Ireland) where we all drove manual transmissions and it was drilled into you, anytime you are stopping for a long/reasonable period of time, to take the car OUT of gear and pull the handbrake.
Sigh.

I turned mine into additional brake lights:
I did the how-to here: http://web.mac.com/ilko/RSA/How-To/E...light_mod.html
It's for a 964 but shouldn't be any different on a 993.

Some bum hit and ran after smashing my center reflector in a parking lot while I was in shopping.
Wasn't too difficult to use the backup light sockets from the broken reflector and wiring them in as brake lights in the unused fog light locations on the new reflector. Doing this makes a neater install than trying to adapt non-factory sockets. Guess you could buy new P-parts too.
This project is so easy a DYI isn't really needed.

What a great idea to change the wiring a little to make those sockets function as additional brake lights. With these cars more rear lighting for tailgaters can't be a bad thing. Besides, depending upon where you live, you may just never have need for rear fog lights. I think in my lifetime of Porsche driving (some 300,000 miles) ( and with rear fogs available) and over 25,000 miles on European roadways alone, I have actually needed to turn mine on 3 times since 1974.

Backup light wiring harness needed
I'm still looking for a backup light wiring harness, if someone has a cracked or smashed rear center reflector. The backup light harness comes with a new center reflector, but is not sold separately. All I really need is the two backup light bulb sockets, if someone has those...
