My car (C2) is now at 2798

I did the following:

Stripped interior to the metal and replaced with RS carpet
Lighweight bucket seats
Rear Seat delete
Replaced floormats with rennline aluminium floor boards
RS door panels
Removed hifi option
Rear wiper delete
Sunroof delete
Removed engine tray
RS washer bottle
Cat bypass

Hey Delanobe - I love your car man - can't beat that clean look.
I'll be doing RS carpet mod soon - was wondering what the cabin noise is like after this mod ?

It's a little louder but not at all annoying or something, the thing I wouldn't remove is the sound deadening under the driver and passenger mats + in the engine compartment.
I did this and that made a big difference in noise so I re-installed it. (Total of +/- 3kg)


Be sure to order the silverknit, it's a bit heavier but much better quality and also helps for the cabin noise.

Resurrection!

Just wanted to add, I recently installed an AntiGravity lithium battery (12.5 lbs). Did it not so much for weight savings rather than just to not have to deal with battery issues. Didn't think I'd be able to feel any difference in driving, but can honestly say the nose felt noticably lighter.

Other weight saving items I have:
RS flywheel/clutch
Ducktail
Rennline lower dash delete
Forged wheels (18-19lbs each)
RSR exhaust (anyone remember these?)
Momo prototipo

1998 Carrera S @ 2830lbs @ 1/3-1/2 tank of gas.
Deleted rear interior.
Light carpet wrapped & added a little sound deadening. Sunroof delete.
Recaro Sportsters
LWFW
Fister 3
RS panels

Proof....not even a/c is removed on most here. It can be clean and not much weight added back in if you’re not into the “Clubsport” look. 996 GT3, tough sell when you can have some fun making the 993 lighter with re-gear and not add to much to the engine.

I’ve got my own and it has all the bits plus some, minus the sunroof. It’s far more attractive to drive than a 6gt3 and holds it value better.

Lots of talk about weight reduction- some getting VERY low. Can anyone enlighten me to the performance changes at say 2,900 vs stock or 2,800 Vs stock?

Are we talking full seconds off a 2.25 mile track run or a second off a 0-60? just curious as to how you'd measure it in performance gains anyway... thanks!

In my experience, yes. Maybe not quite one second at 2900 vs 2800, but close to that depending on the track and driver skill. I've started racing in a spec series where the rules strive to make all cars equal (same tires, suspension, engine, brakes, etc). In that world, where the cars must be at least 2850 (with driver), 100 lbs could be the difference between winning and losing a race. I've not seen any consistent winners that are 100 lbs over weight. At stock weight, the average driver would be at the back of the field, many seconds off the pace.

And for the avoidance of doubt, I don't recommend significant weight loss (or other track stuff) for a street car unless the owner knows the compromises. After building and racing a couple cars, I've developed the perspective that trying to strike a balance between lightweight race car and comfortable street car is not a good use of my time/money. When I had just 1 car, it made more sense.

100# loss of chassis weight is worth a bit less than 1 ft/s^2 avg acceleration in 1st and decreases as you progress through the gears but the effect goes beyond that in improved braking and cornering

another factor is where the weight comes from, least significant 100#s is at the cabin floor, most significant 100#s is from the bumpers and other structures at the ends of the car 100#s from the roof is somewhere in between

for wheel/tire loss it gets a bit more complicated as it depends on the weight, radius and distribution of the mass but 100# loss there has a significantly larger effect than 100 # in the chassis

I got mine down to ~2700 w/ a full tank,that plus gearing motor and suspension make a huge difference, better for track use less so for street use

Rear interior looks great! Actually whole car looks great. Can you share where you sourced the rear carpeting? I'd like to do something similar and delete the rear seats. Thanks!

Had an interior shop do it. Requested as light as possible and try to make it look decent. Made a flat shelf in back custom cut a board. Then did carpet. Wrapped dash in alcantara, steering wheel and roof liner since sunroof delete.

I am at 2580 pounds with my silver 993, almost in all aspects converted into a RS specs, except engine, gearbox, glasses and brakes.

I removed the A/C, the heating system, the water tank for windshield wipers and many other things, all reversable.
The car was weighed few days ago on precision scales



The other project I am starting is going to stop at 2315 pounds or less, but it will be something else than a reversable work.

2315 lbs is a honest target ...
I'm now down to 2,476 lbs with 15 liter of fuel. That with a lot of efforts and not much more to remove / change ....
