Is it for looks? I would think it protects the mat surface better, although no heal rubber may give it a better look. Just curious. I never knew they offered it that way.

Yes, you can specify no rubber. I just prefer the clean look.

From my experience that's exactly right. My first set looked great but wore out right fairly quickly at the heal contact points. My next set had the heal pads and while not as clean a look, they wore well and looked much better in the long run.
Oh no! I've lost total control of this thread. Nice to know that my car is now associated with little blue creatures (some androgynous) that walk around all day speak their own kind of dialect which utilizes the all-purpose word, "smurf." Like I need to go take a smurf. Thanks Andreas I'm depressed.
