Happy to see you are alright out of all this.

Slim chance, but I'd check to see if anyone in that area had surveillance cameras that might have caught the b@stard on video.

I'd like to see the laws modified so that anyone who uses a weapon in a crime can legally be shot in the back as they run away! If you've pointed a weapon at me in the commission of a crime, I think your disregard for my life should be reciprocated.

(ok, someone will say they'll just shoot you, then steal, but that attracts attention they don't really want. So I don't buy that line of reasoning.)

Hey, did we just turn into this forum?

Woah! Sorry to hear what happened to you. As others mentioned, what matters most is your safety. It's crazy that some people have the courage to mugged others for their own beneficial. Hopefully, they get caught and let the law punish them.

Very glad to read your post because the outcome was reasonable--you weren't hurt. While I used to have CCPs in several states (including Mass, a difficult state to get one), you have to be extremely well trained and in good practice to carry a handgun and be ready to use it. Most people can merely carry a handgun but when it comes down to brass tacks, it's really hard to make a split second decision to shoot. And it should be to kill, because to merely wound someone can invite a retaliatory 'gunfight.' It takes training and practice to make such snap decisions. What your original posting can do for the rest of us is to alert us to be mindful of our surroundings and make sure that we don't place ourselves in such a place, if avoidable.

The problem is that when a gun is already drawn and pointing at you, it doesn't matter how many guns and permits you have on you. Try to be a hero and you know what happens.
I'm very happy to hear that you're not hurt!
Just think how close you came to never driving your 993 again!
Everything else can be replaced.

+1, glad to hear you made it home alive.

I have a CCP but have never felt the need to carry, yet. Didn't want to wait until I felt I needed one and then have to wait the 4 mos. for the training/application went through.

Wish no one here ever has to be put in that position again, hope that's not wishful thinking.

Wow, scary stuff.

May I ask what part of the Bay Area you were in?

Skipping to the end here, but just wanted to also say it's great to hear you got out of it without injury.

On a similar, but no way life threatening, note I was accosted twice in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago. I didn't fear a gun over there, but it's been forever since I've encountered a bad situation here in Oakland and I was pretty unprepared.

Everyone keep your guard up!

Yes, it is very strange, but good point about possibly seeing the assailant again. I'll keep my eye out.

Thanks Ken, it's good to hear from you. Are you going to make it to the partsheaven.com meet this weekend?

Certainly sounds like you did exactly what you 'should have' done. Even with due vigilance, it is hard to be 100% certain of your surroundings to know that someone uninvited is nearby.

You guys know what's the worst thing about all this? It's not the "trama," or the financial loss (roughly $1000 in personal belongings). It's the inconvenience. I've been going on 5 days now without a cellphone (I don't have a landline) and I've had to cancel all my credit cards along with my ATM, so now I can't get any cash out of my own bank because not only do I not have my card, I don't have my ID...and yeah knowing my social security number isn't enough (wtf?). I made my appointment for the DMV today but I still have to wait 2-3 weeks for my replacement driver's license to arrive. At least my amex card was delivered the next business day. So now all I have in my wallet is an amex card. Sheesh. Damn you, mugger.

So about 3 hours ago (10:10pm) I was mugged. Long story short, I got in my car (I was driving my acura suv at the time) and a few seconds later, the mugger tapped on my door told me to give him all my money and cocked his gun. Now, my dad is a hunter so I've grown up around firearms, so the sound of a semi-auto handgun being cocked is something I recognize. All I needed to hear was that sound, and I knew things could get really ugly. I didn't have any cash on me at the moment, but the mugger made off with my wallet, cellphone, and pocket knife. Really nothing if you think about it, but an interesting experience nonetheless.

I guess times really are getting tough. Even though I'm angry that I was mugged, a part of me ponders the extenuating circumstances one must be in, in order to go to such desperate measures just to make ends meet. It's a crazy world we live in guys. Be safe, don't take things for granted, and don't go out at night!! Thanks for reading.

edit: anyone have a cellphone that works with ATT they'd consider donating?
Something similar happened to a buddy of mine. Stopped at Mc-D's on the south side of chicago after a night of drinking and was followed into the bathroom by some gang banger who pulled out a Mac-10 and wanted his money. He gave the guy his wallet and cell phone, but still pushing the gun in his face. Probably some sort of gang initiation and he didn't think it was going to end well and he had about 100 lbs on the guy so game on. The fought in the bathroom for a few minutes until the gun went off and that's what finally drew attention the bathroom and the guy took off. He ended up with loosing his wallet. After that my buddy was super freaked out since the guy had is home address with his wife and kids at home. Needless to say there were guns on every floor, every room of the house for a while.

Wow, Jimmy. So glad you made it through unscathed. Unfortunately, aside from the real hassel of having to deal with credit cards and such, the haunting feel one gets from such an incident stays with you ...this I know having been held up once, with my three brothers and closest friends. I shuddered to think what could have happened, and took some time for me to get past that feeling.

There are some things we can do to be vigilent, but there are those times where you just never know.... Again, glad you're ok.

"Hey, here in Los Angeles we're doing pretty well. We have "only" had 117 homicides so far this year. Last year we were at 160 at this time. Back in the late eighties early nineties we topped out in the 700 and 800s per year; sad stuff! "

This is true because noone can afford bullets hehehe
