I try to keep up with all the various model designations both internal and external since the 356. Now I notice that members speak about the 997.1 and the 997.2.
When did this start? I never heard of a 993.1 or a 996.1.
Does Porsche internally use this xxx.x designation as well, or is this just something used by owners to designate some major change to the 997?
I recall there are letter designations used by Porsche to tell you the production dates. For example, "S Program" were 993's produced from August 1994 to July 1995. Have the numbers replaced the letters?

Never official. 996.1 = 3.4litre, 98-01. 996.2 = 3.6litre, 02-04. 997.1 = 3.6 & 3.8, 05-08. 997.2 = 3.6 & 3.8 DFI, 09-present. Then there's the 996GT3s Mk I & II and on and on..............

Thanks Tim. The part about never being official is interesting. I'd be curious how the Porsche Red Book describes the various newer models.
Personally, I like the letters. This has got way too complicated. I notice that the 996's produced from August 98 to July 99 was "X Program". Maybe they just ran out of letters and went to the numbers.

It's 'cause Microsoft got us soooo... used to revisions that we have the xxx.x system applied now to cars. I kinda doubt you'll see that sort of thing applied to car models BEFORE the computer revolution.
eg
911, 911SC, 911 Carrera, 964, 993
vs 997.1...
