Adventures with a 996 Owner
#31
At Hershey this year there was a group of 3 guys around 2 brand new 997 Turbos parked next to my 993. One of the guys comes up to me and asks what my car is. I tell him a C2S and he is still puzzled so he asks is that a 993 or 996. I let him and his friends in on the whole air/H2O thing and what else makes this car more desirable to some than others with its small nuances and such and all he does is tell me how much HP he has and its 0-60 time.
We talked about how you can buy an 05 997 for less than a nice 993 and he just could not understand why anyone would buy an older slower car for more. I said goodbye and got in my car and rolled the window down. 997 Turbo came back and said that I must know what I am talking about because every person that walked past both of our cars looked at mine and past his.
I would like to think I got through to him, but I have a feeling that after his lease is up he will be buying a Viper or GTR.

Im sure there are a number of 993 owners out there that dont know jack about their car. Its like someone trying to explain the concept of marraige to me. I dont know what the hell they are talking about nor do I care.
I know a little more than the average person about Porsche's. Of course, the average person is stupid!!

Thanks for the info on reutterwerk. Never heard of the site. Looks like a new venture from admin John! BTW, I did see the grill on the front page with CGFEN at Pioneer Porsche. I like it but for $7000 - yikes!

OK - that's enough.
*I* am (was) an original airhead. Carbs, cams, stripped interior. We made fun of your cooshy 993's, especially the overweight bloated C4S
*I* distinguished between the 901 and the 911. *I* know the difference between Nikasil and Alusil. *I* prefer the 915 to the G50.
But when it came time to move up *I* chose a 996 over a 993. Why? Because the 996 performs better, and because I drove a 993 and it felt like a soft old car.
Sure the 996 isn't as pretty as the 993 but unlike you guys I drive a Porsche because it's a performance car, not because I want to look cool.

I'm with Jasper. Enough!
On the topic of ignorance: Expecting it from the majority of water-cooled 911 owners after a few chance encounters is silly. More 996/997s on the road means the average water-cooled P-car owner isn't as likely to be a wonk like the folks here, sure. But is it useful to assume all of them are as some of you have done in this thread?
Here's my ownership story: I happened to fall in love with the Boxster concept when I was just a kid, and decided I'd own one someday. That someday came, but not before I read up and learned all I could about Porsche and their wonderful road and race cars. Owned a Boxster S for about four years (should I don my flame suit? ), then moved on to a 997 C2S. Some people may take a different route, like the corporate lease or spending their bonus on a shiny new "Porsh" to sit next to their Lexus SUVs and Bimmers, but it's their money and it feeds the company that makes my favorite cars. I'll admit that I'll be the first to say it's pronounced "porsch-uh"--not to thumb my nose, but to enlighten. My point is: Take 'er easy fellas, no one is actively seeking to dilute the history behind your hood badge (or your resale value).
And as for the ongoing saga of Air v. Water: 993s are wonderful (yes! I have driven a few), and certainly have character traits that my 997 doesn't. The opposite is true, and it would be good form for the 993 crowd to acknowledge that. With the water-cooled 911 Porsche has made a car that meets modern safety and emissions regs while delivering new levels of performance and equipment at lower prices adjusted for inflation than the later 993s. And they still have that Porsche feel. Can't beat that!

here is the real rub...996/997 (includes boxter and cayman) owners outside of rennlist and dare i say recent pca folks (with current water thumpers) act like tools most of the time...not saying all. the 944/924/928 owners are always so nice...flash their lights or want to come up and chat. The current water thumpers which include soccer moms (not always) in the "pig" are generally jack a.... i am suprised the water thumpers from rennlist are so fired up...can't u folks read the original post

I daresay that the majority of us on Rennlist regardless of which model we drive are nonetheless enthusiasts and do know "something" about our cars and the ones that came before.
We also have interest in what has evolved since.
Some of the comments that want to blanket "most" 996 owners as completely lacking knowledge of what we drive is ludicrous and probably what caused someof us to comment on.
Have a great day!
Pete
p.s. In my case as I am sure many others, it was the older air coolers that made me fall in love with Porsche and eventually buy one.
