Thanks for posting the TSB Bill. I had it in my head for some reason that you had to run 18s to fit over Big Reds...
Incidentally, I too miss some of the really knowledgeable Rennlisters of the past. Viken, where are you?!

Thanks again, Bill.
Mike:
I was wondering the same thing (about whether the wheels in the first photo are 18" Sport Classic IIs instead of 17" Sport Classics) - so I zoomed in to see if I could see the bolts that are found on the 18" Sport Classic IIs, and couldn't see them.
I think the reason the wheels in the first photo look like they might be 18"s is because the car in the first photo sits lower - or maybe they are 18s. Either way, I really like the BBS design (I think they are actually made by BBS too).

The issue is the axial clearance behind the spokes. It's true that some 17s, like the Kinesis Supercup 17s use a tapered barrel where there is both radial and axial interference.

Classic IIs are made by BBS. I would assume that the Is are, probably, made by BBS as well.
What surprised me about that first pic of a silver car that it's an S -car and the wheel seems to sit right against the rear fender edge. Which would not be consistent with 55mm offset in 9" wheel. However, it would be consistent with Classic II in 10" 65mm offset.

The silver car is not a wide body.
Also, based on memory, 65mm (18" x 10") is the rear offset for narrow (non S) bodies.

Aha, that would explain the offset.
I recognised where i saw those wheels. Some of the Boxster S came with them, I believe, but those were 8.5" on the rear and would probably require small spacers. So I'll need to look for 7' and 9" set from a 996.
