Bergamasco-

I'm quite some time away from adding a new stereo to the 968. I did look at Ebay listings and you can get the Grand Prix from Ebay.de (Germany). Someone on Rennlist (I searched and could not find) just got one I believe.

The price was pretty steep- over $400 USD, not including shipping to the states. Once I do some other things to the car, I'll look into the stereo. Probably not until 2010, but it doesn't hurt to plan ahead!!!!

I heard that it is $450 USD for a refurbished CDR220 - so I think that is a very good price.

If you are going to buy new current models I would first go with the Eclipse CD5300. Cosmetically it looks pretty good for a new HU, not so flashy and has one of the better CD players compared to the other manufactures. And my second choice would be an Alpine CDA 9887. This unit also has a great cd player and other good features such as high out put RCA's but is a little on the flashy side.

But the best choice I think that you could make is going with the Nakamchi CD500. This head unit is a little older but you still can buy new. It has one of the best CD Players period. Dual Burr-Brown DA convertes and has a very classy subdued look that fits the 911 dash so well. I have one and it truly is amazing!!! JMHO

The CDR220 was $250 from Harmon International in NJ when I bought (refurbed). It was another $100 to get the face modified so that you could see it in the 968 (angle is all wrong). From what I hear, you might need to get the face mod for it in a 993 as well. One thing to find out would be if the display of the grand prix is readible in the 993/968... I dunno!

I totally agree how great (i.e., stock) looking the Naks are. However, I don't think I'm buying one.

I wrote them a few years ago to ask if they were going to add any modern features to their players (specifically satellite). they simply told me no. My hypothesis was that this was a held brand that was being whored out, which is partly validated by this Wikipedia article on Nak. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakamichi

The decks they sell now have been on the market for YEARS. I like the way they look, but there are plenty of good brands with higher quality products and at better prices. If it's super-high end audio your after (which you won't be able to hear in your 993 anyway) there are numerous head units with 24-bit DACs. for example.

Also noticed three with 24-bit DACs on JVC's website.

Forgot to add try looking at woofersetc.com. They have better pricing than Crutchfield.

Leave the radio off. Listen to the engine - much better music.

Couldn't agree more! Nak is the way to go. Understated, but more than adequate.

Thanks for the excellent tips guys. I like the look of that Pioneer unit and the specs are quite impressive! Happy motoring to all.

We are the only company to make a Single DIN in-dash with a 3.5" screen and built in NAV as well as built in Hard Drive (KDNX5000). This unit is OEM in the new TESLA Roadster.

If you need IPOD USB connection, check out our KDR600 ($139.99)

Also, from a purely cosmetic standpoint, nothing on the market touches our KDR300 ($99.99). It has a Multicolor option which allows you to choose between 30,000 color options. You can match the 993 illumination easily.

We also offer the KDHDR50 ($159.99) which has IPOD USB 2.0, Multicolor and Built-in HD with itunes tagging.

I have never owned any JVC products, but my roommate in college was a big JVC fan. Probably one of the most under rated brands around, from what I have seen, high quality, but doesn't seem to have the advertising at least in the states, to knock Sony off its perch.

That would probably be me. It was a little less than $500 shipped from Germany. Becker Grand Prix 7990. Looks like it was made for a 993.

Just want to pass on the advice that was given to me by a good soul on this board and which I ignored. Just do something simple and cheap - a 993 is not a good place to enjoy a hi-fi. I am a serious hi-fi nut and would not hesitate to recommend that you spend the max that you would enjoy for your home, but not for your 993. I spent USD3.5k for my first 993 and got a system which I could only appreciate when the engine was off and then to be honest it did not do a lot for me. Just my two cents..

Chris I disagree, I have a Nak CD400, amp, component speakers in front, and subs on the rear floor, and it sounds great. Key really is enough power (I have a 520w amp).

TX Silver-

Would you be willing to share any pics of the install and perhaps where you ended up getting the Grand Prix?

Thanks in advance.

MisterB- sorry for the hijack.

I would love to share pictures of the install, but have to work through butchered wiring first and that's probably a couple of weeks out. I saw the unit in this thread from early last year.

I ended up ordering from Kolumbus24 in Germany. They were great to deal with.
