I have been slowly tinkering with my stock HIFI stereo in the 993tt. The foams of the stock mids were decayed, and the woofers blown so I started by replacing the mids with new factory units (could not find a 3 1/2" speaker that fit well in the pods), and used an Infinity Reference 5 1/4" components to replace the tweeters and woofers. A slight bit of "clearancing" was required to fit the woofers in the pods, and the new tweeters I just jammed into the stock tweeter housings. The result was an insanely "bright" sound with more low end than before, but the sound only improved from a "shot clock radio" to a "new clock radio."
I pondered replacing the factory amp with an Alpine PDX-100 and adding a Kenwood KSC sub under the seats but decided I wanted to first add bluetooth. I ended up ordering a new Becker Grand Prix (7990) from a German ebay vendor - cost with shipping was about $500 USD which I thought was reasonable since I would be getting
1)built-in bluetooth for the phone
2)CD headunit
3)Ipod connectivity (requires cable)
4)factory appearance
After 1 month of shipping delay I got the unit and installed it today in about 1 hour. The plugs at the back are completely identical to the stock CR-210. I simply unplugged the stock wiring, removed the stock headunit "cage" and plugged in the new unit. I found that the stock CDC worked perfectly, but I had no audio whatsoever.
Issue is in the C1 connector the #6 wire is supposed to be an amp trigger in the stock system, but in the new system it is a subwoofer output. I tapped into the A connector #7 wire (switched power) and ran it to the C1 connector and soldered it to the #6 wire. Voila! Sound!
My impressions are that the sound is improved 100%. The bass and mids are much more full and the tweeters are no longer overly bright. This is without any adjustment from "0" of bass and treble, and with loudness "on". No longer would I call it a "clock radio" but rather a "bookshelf system." It is not audiophile quality but it is nowhere near as tinny and "thin" as before, to the point I am not going to replace the amp or add a sub.

when I opened this topic I was sure it was an exhaust thread.
I only listen to music in my 993tt when I'm trying to get amped up for the race track.
oh and my car's P.O. did some cool stuff to the car- I've got a 6 disc in dash player. all the euro-trance one can cram into a headunit. lol

Since this is a 993TT audio thread, I thought this would be a good place for a simple question. My 1997 993TT has the stock stereo system with cassette player (instead of a CD player) with the Nokia factory sound control system with the Nokia controls in the driver's side door pocket. Can I swap the factory stereo control unit with the cassette player in the dash for the unit with the CD player (I believe they started making those in 1998) and will it interface with the car and, more importantly, link up with the Nokia control unit?

I'd imagine that if it's a porsche cdr unit you should be okay- someone installed one with traffic nav from a 2000 something boxster into their 993, there was a recent post about it

My particular unit has no sat inputs, but has MP3, iPod and phone Bluetooth:

There is a unit that looks factory with NAV called the Indianapolis pro:

There are other Becker units that have NAV built in with a color map display but it was closer to $1500 and did not look as factory

If anyone is interested I used the eBay vendor www.Kolumbus24.com and the salesguy was Stefan. The shipping took nearly a month due to the Xmas delays but was finally successful. BeckerUSA has the iPod harness on backorder with an ETA of 4 weeks

did I understand that wiring mod correctly in that it only needed to be made if you wanted to use the changer and that for the head unit only, it was plug & play?

eclou - one more question: I assume the unit comes with a microphone but what kind of plug/jack is used for it? My car has the batphone and I'd like to be able to use the built-in mike which has a min-plug (looks like plug on a set of ipod/mp3 player phones except 2 conductor rather than 3). Think that'll plug in or will it require some splicing?

Doug the mike is a 2 prong clip like on a computer fan. It is not a miniplug at all but I would see no reason an adapter could not be found or made. The plug for the mike is female, the receptacle on the headunit is male.
Here are some installed pics of the actual unit. The illumination shot is tough since I am not familiar enough yet to handle manual exposure settings.

Bluetooth works great. Unlike the parrot kits in my other cars the Becker's headunit keys can be used to dial direct. I have not figured out yet how to activate the voice dialing. The iPod I have not hooked up yet since the cable is on backorder for 4 weeks. I could order it from Germany but then the International shipping is going to take 3 weeks.
