Oh, no number-plates anymore...

After Butzi's dead, it seems to be, that his car is going to a museum-queen.

Marc-- True. On the positive side: I'm thrilled it's not a garage queen, locked away from the public eye.

Originally, it was my impression that the Porsche family had no plans to ever let it away from their private estate collection.

Recently seen at the museum:

The factory's intent on the wheel caps being level with the ground, regardless whether they point to the tire valve stems.

At least three 1994-1995 model year Speedsters on display

It'll be the first time I've missed Monterey since I started going back in 2007. Kind of upset about it but its best we don't go because I'm beat up! Go to Tarpy's and my favorite, 1833 and have a Zacapa & Coke for me...

Oh yes, it was good to see Butzi´s 993 Speedster again! If you´ve got the chance to get to Zuffenhausen, you should watch this special exhibition "50 Jahre Porsche 911". You won´t be disappointed, I´m sure

Andreas-- Welcome back! Thanks as always for the great photo of the 993 Speedster that started it all, plus your work documenting Speedsters.

I couldn't help but be reminded of the fun trip back to your very first RL post ... what an awesome track record of you witnessing the 'Butzi-mobile' in person, plus a fun trend of us welcoming each other back after long absences

Default 2015 Speedster quick Photoshop edit

From AutoWeek.com:

Originally Posted by Davey G. Johnson

When European-car importer Max Hoffman suggested to Porsche that the American audience might like a cheaper, open-top version of the company's 356, Stuttgart responded with the Speedster. And while every Porsche partisan is a special snowflake -- some love road-going racers like the 904, others can't imagine life without a roof-rack-equipped 912, others go gaga for anything with a legit, lift-off Targa top, and some folks just really, really, really love 924s -- the Speedster's the light, lovable kid brother for which any fan of the marque has a measure of affection.

Porsche knows it, and as such, they've introduced limited Speedster models of every 911 series since the 3.2 Carrera -- except for the oft-maligned 996 (which is still loved by its proponents, IMS-bearing issues aside). The most recent Speedster was a dumpy, bulky thing with all-wrong proportions and out-of-place 930-style rock shields. It reeked of cynicism.

Journalists cringe at the prices on Porsche's option sheets -- and how can one not, when an Alcantara-clad shift **** will ding you a sum closer to $900 than $800? Fans -- whether they have the cash or not -- let it slide. “That's Porsche,” they rationalize. “You pays your money and you takes your choice.” Though the 997 Speedster sunk the hearts of plenty of Zuffenhausen faithful, the cars still sold. Certainly, every limited-run Porsche that's not a homologation special is some sort of cash grab. But many of them, like the 997 SportClassic and the new 991 50th Anniversary Edition, are lovely vehicles with sublime aesthetic touches.

So with hesitation, we bring you the news that Porsche's apparently working on a new 911 Speedster due in 2015. Germany's AutoBild reports that it'll get a thin, manually operated top suitable for emergency weather conditions, a la the recent Boxster Spyder's itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny scrap of bikini fabric.

At any rate, we hope the 991's ample lengthiness will result in a sleeker sort of Speedster. AutoBild says Porsche's planning to build 550 of them, in tribute to the mid-engined 550 Spyder. Apparently, they figure the market's bigger than 356 cars.
From CarScoops.com:

It’s been used over the years on the back of a number of models, the most recent of which being the 997-based 911 Speedster from almost three years ago.
Now, AutoBild tells us that it may be brought back in early 2015, as a limited series model with a unique body similar to that of the 2011 car, based on the latest 991 cabrio. Apparently limited to just 550 units, in this way Porsche will be paying tribute to the original 550 Spyder.

We imagine it’s going to incur the same treatment as before and feature a chopped windscreen, a rudimentary and most likely manual rag top and additional unique touches to set it apart, kind of like the quick Photoshop edit you see here.

Porsche has a wide array of these that it’s been known to use on special models, so we won’t speculate as to which ones it would use here, but the ducktail spoiler would surely look nice on the back of this new 911 Speedster...

Some searching revealed these originals:
