Default LSD install question

I don't know about the rest of you, but the search function it is not working for me. My 95 does not have the LSD option so I am in search of getting one. My question is will this be a straight forward install or do I need additional parts other than LSD to make this work?

I had an LSD installed in a non-LSD car -- you only have to buy the LSD -- it goes right in.

Approximate cost to buy one and get someone to install it?

$2k to $4k depending on what you buy and who does the install. Used stock LSD or new Guard LSD and DIY or have a pro install.

You can pick up a used 993 OEM LSD for a few hundred bucks from a dismantler, then have Paul Guard rebuild/refresh it for @ $500. A 964 turbo LSD has been suggested over a stock 993 unit.

A Guard LSD will set you back @ $2,500.

Some special tools (and knowledge) are required for install, so it's probably not an average DIY.

Who suggested that and why?

The 964RS and 964t used a 20/100, 4 plate unit, which can cause some handling quirks
993 nomal used a 25/65 or 22/40 2 plate
993RS used 40/65 4plate
current RSR uses 40/65
GT are mostly 40/60, 50/80 but do have some other options

Dan Jacobs (and Randy Meyers from Whaletail Canada), for track use, and since the 4 plate unit is more robust than the OEM 993 model. Obviously the 993RS lockup ratios would be a better match for daily driving, but good luck finding a used RS LSD!!!

Would it make sense trying to source a 964 NA LSD? I assume these are 4 plate, but not sure of the lockup ratios.

Not all of the 964 LSD's are four plate - I bought one and it turned out to be a two plate iteration.

I respect Dans opion very much, the 964t/RS lsd is more robust, the 20/100 part may have slipped his mind.

The 964 normal lsd, as Chris mentioned, is a less robust 2 plate 40/40. Very prone to wear and not particularly effective when new. These are far less effective than the old ZF 40/40s used thru '83

Chris: Was that the one that came out of my car? (An original from '92 as far as I knew)

Yep, same basic POS inside a different transmission.

Thanks Steve. It kills me that the LSD in my 993 was probably worn out at 10K miles and the one in my 193K + mile E30 BMW still works.
