Default Dual Mass Explosion

Gents-

Wanted to find out if any one on this board has experienced a dual mass explosion. I have a C2, 1996 with roughly 58k miles on it. The transmission was fine until I lend it to my brother who ended crucifying it. In short, my mechanic was driving to his shop from Chicago to Michigan to get it fix/change it to a lightwheel. The dual mass literally exploded taking bits and pieces of the bellhousing and starter. Has anyone experience this before. Do I need to change the whole bellhousing? In need of serious input, as the invoice to get it fix is climbing to the $7,000+ range.

Wow, a lot of damage. Was the inner hub of the flywheel still on the crank?

The car was been driven when the explosion occurred...had to be towed the rest of the way to the garage as explained to me by my mechanic. I knew the clutch was on its last leg..lots of slippage but never dreamed this could be such a bad scenario.

My advice is to get a trans from a dismantler.

+1 ^ The bellhousing and tranny are one part and unfortunately, you cannot just replace the bellhousing.

The good news is that a stock 993 gearbox isn't very expensive. This repair shouldn't cost $7K. It should cost the price of a good used gearbox, plus whatever labor you were going to pay for the clutch job.

Since when do DMFs explode?!! OK, the old Luk of the 964s "failed" but explode? That looks hideous! Is there anywarning sign for such catastrophic failure?

The only nasty clutches I've seen arose from extreme right foot angst, and a communication disconnect with the right hand: driving granny to the pharmacy for a bottle of liniment ( or limping to the garage with a known defect) rarely causes such carnage ......

I'm very interested in finding out what in the world could have caused this kind of damage. Did you have a clutch slave or transmission work done earlier?
