Default 993 Compresssion Test/Leak down

I was recently told that it is not necessary to have a compression test or leak down done on a 1996 through 1998 993 engine because the on board computer will tell you if there is bad compression, leaks or valve guide issues. Is this true? Or should I still have a compression test and leak down done? Looking for a C4S and trying to figure out how to make sure I get a solid car that I don't have to dump a bunch of money into after I buy it. Any other thoughts would be appreciated!!

Whoever told you that is either totally clueless about Porsches and cars in general or trying to pull the wool over your eyes ie BS you.

A PPI with a leakdown is absolutely required. No onboard computer on any car tells you this. There are various causes of a check engine light that could include valve guide problems. The CEL is not to be relied upon as means of determining engine condition. Some unscrupulous folks disasble the CEL.

I would search for a PPI checklist here and then ask the forum members for a shop recommendation in your area.

You should have these tests completed. At a minimum, a leak down test, IMHO.

Don't ever buy a car without doing these tests.

Thanks for all the feedback. That was my gut feeling but just wanted to make sure. By the way, it was the owner of Weissach Autohaus that told me that. With that said, I would be careful buying a car from them.

My earlier comments about the seller still apply.

Unbelievable! But, unfortunately, I do believe you of course. It isn't a proper PPI without a compression and leakdown test.

LOL!!! 993's computers are fairly stupid, & really don't check a lot of things.

To my knowledge, no ECU out there can tell you about compression & leak down.

Do a leak-down or compression test, & don't do it at that shop!

I wish our computers would log everything & let us know when things are below threshold(!) sans SAI.
