Boy, this thread brings back some great memories. How about the Black Forest? On one trip, we stayed in Freiberg a few days and really enjoyed it. Speaking of museums, if you get a chance, go to Mulhouse in France just across the German border and go to the French National Automobile Museum (The Schlumpf Collection...World's largest collection of Bugattis...and any other marques..in an unforgettable setting.)

While in Germany I concentrate on driving and beer. Not at teh same time, though.

My trip over there last year was the best vacation ever, but the best parts were driving the passes in the Dolomites (Italian part of the Alps).

+1. It's not so much being able to legally drive at high speed, it's the ability to really concentrate on driving briskly without having to constantly scan you mirrors/onramps/bushes for the cops. In a word - freedom. The excellent German drivers are a bonus too.

One word of warning - when you return to the states, you'll hate unskilled/undisciplined American drivers even more. Also, you'll find yourself automatically driving triple digits when conditions allow.

Absolutely... When I lived in Vienna in the late '90's we would often drive into Bavaria for day trips just to enjoy the drive. Not only are the Germans decent drivers but their cars are well maintained and the roads are top quality too.

Recommend Hitler's Eagles Nest, at Berchtesgaden.

This is an amazing place.

the best experience is picking up your car at the factory in Stuttgart! My face still hurts from smiling all day when I picked up my C2 993 on July 6, 1994. They treated us like royalty and then introduced us to our car under a spotlight in an arena of about 150 other cars. I even saw the interior of a car being constructed for Maria Navratolova out of snake skin. If you can ever do it, pick it up at the factory. It is special.
