Launching a tiptronic - whats the best way ?
My friend recently purchased a BMW 335i coupe (E92) with the sport auto transmission. Man - that thing is fast. With max 400nm of torque from 1300rpm it making my 993 tip look like a dinosour at the lights - which it sort of is in todays times.
Anyone have any suggestions on getting a better launch ? Probably holding the break hard while reving to 2000rpm and then launching ? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
My tip is lightly modified with chip, airfilter, cat bypass, and some weight reduction. A group of us will do doing some 1/4 runs at a race track soon and I think the 993 tip is going to look a little slow.

I'm no tip expert, but if you're going to try and drag start a 993, I would do it with more conviction and use much more than 2000 rpms.
Still, if you're trying to compete with your friend's 335i, maybe the answer real is supercharger.

How long do you want the trans to last?
Hold the brake, down hard, then slowly hit the gas, until you can't hold the car anymore, then floor it, & let off the brake.
Another way, this is BAD, put in N, rev, then drop in D & you floor it.

Neither way sounds too good for the tranny, eh? I don't know - too scared to try either one...

Ironically the fairly robust tip tranny is less likely to detonate than a manual in a 993 drag race. You really aren't getting peak power until 4500 RPM+ so the advice of holding on to the brake while gassing the snot out of it sounds like the way to go, if you must. Your friend's 335i is out of it's torque curve right when your's is peaking, so driven in the way prescribed your 993 should hold it's own.
I wouldn't do it though, personally.

Holding the brakes while revving the engine really shouldn't put any wear on the transmission - torque converter, maybe, but not the transmission itself.

Ask s4-on-your-back-door; he's on his second tranny. Now the tranny supposed to be dumpproof, but add an SC + launches = no mod money.
Get your RPM high as possible... then release the brake....all the while shifting in manual..at least that what I did when I AX...
And 2000..is nothing...

Why dont you challenge him to a 2 out of 3. Drag race+ track lap times+ braking contest? That way you dont even have to try on the drag race, you have the advantage on the other two. OK, well I hope you've done a couple of DEs, you might need them afterall.

isn't it a twin turbo we're talking about ?
you cannot floor the gas with brakes applied, your rpm will peg at 2250 rpm. this is the test that your converter is healthy actually.
Safety mapping would not let you rev in N and plunk the D. it will hook the gears below 1000 rpm.
Stop in second gear. Floor the pedal and in a fraction of a second, tip down to first. it will shoot faster than flooring in first.

If you only do it a couple of times you should be fine. Just make sure the trans isn't super hot, & that you have changed the fluid in over it's 10+ year life.
I launched my 300 wheel hp & 330 wheel torque Audi S4 TIP a couple of times, it was fine.

As said, it's the TC that will blow first.

At any rate, I'm still not sure I want to abuse the car in ways not intended. Can't afford to fix anything that blows up right now!
Although I am a bit tempted to try George's method just once...
