Default Discusting scam

I've seen my share of scams over the past 15 years, but there are sometimes things that we hold fairly sacred. One of them is a community and in this case Rennlist community. Many of us trust each other and the 993 forum has a certain brand trust to it any time it's mentioned.

To that end I was really pissed off to see the following ad: http://micronesia.craigslist.org/ctd/1025229177.html

I will quote it here before it's flagged and pulled. I have seen the same scam ad on other Craigslist city cites, not just this Guam crap. I don;t want to post pictures here, but you can see a white coupe on the pics in the add. Do we even know whose car is being exploited? Can you tell I'm a bit upset?

1997 PORSCHE 993 C4S

Mileage: 61,000 miles

Vehicle title: Clear

Body type: Coupe
Engine: 6 Cylinder
Exterior color: White

Transmission: Manual
Fuel type: Gasoline
Interior color: Black

- 97 C4S Glacier White
- 60K miles, Top End Rebuild done by Devek 5K miles ago
- Last 2 owners are Porschephiles & Rennlisters in Portland. Mostly a garage queen.
- Car hasn't been tracked or raced, according to some "background check" I did when I bought the car, talking to Jeff and various Porsche people in Portland who knows the car. I have never had the heart to track this car myself since I bought it.
- Very clean inside & out. Rubber seals, interiors, paint, etc. all very fresh.
- original C4S "Turbo Twist" wheels (included in this sale)

If I'm not mistaken, this car was listed for sale here recently (I remember discussion re. the aftermarket tail). Obviously the pics and info have been transposed re. the Craigslist scam.

I don't understand. Why do you think it's a scam? Looks fine to me, unless I'm missing something.

The price of $15850 is suspect. At least I sure hope it is. 993 values haven't dropped that far, have they? LOL. That car was listed for sale here in Nov. 08.

The email address bounces back. I hate these time wasting ads too.

Eric, yeah, I did not metnion the price, which was a dead scam giveway. And the fact that the car was simultaneously listed in Guam and a few US cities about 3000 miles away... dod not seem particularly possible in a physical sense.

Sadly, this happens a lot. It's not about the community, it's about outsiders finding good pictures. But I have to say that it begs the question, if you're in Beantown, why are you looking at CL in micronesia?

Hi:

Have not had time to login for a looong while. Had been really busy at work and helping a friend kick off a startup.

The above ad and pictures are indeed stolen from me. I STILL HAVE THE CAR but the Craigslist ad is not from me. I posted it here in the classifieds and I posted it on ebay back in November. I got a few pings but no serious takers. I've been so busy I have not try to relist it yet...

Thanks for the alert!

I have flagged that ad to Craigslist also. You really have to watch out for scams at Craigslist these days...

If it seems way too good to be true, it probably is. Whenever I suspect a scam like this, my first email simply asks for a contact number to ask some detailed questions. If you get a BS response about traveling etc, walk away. Or you may want to screw with the scammer a bit.

If you are selling something I have noticed that the scammers usually start with "Greetings Sir" and then proceed with the usual BS.

What really bugs me now is that they are trying scams on everything, it used to be just larger items. I listed a kitchen table and chair set for $350 on Craigslist. I got a BS reply about sending movers from NY and we need to proceed with giving them my EBAY info. The item is not even on EBAY.
