Default OT: Cross country in 3 days in my "new" C43

Even though its not Porsche related I have been summoned to publish the accounts of my epic cross country journey..

So.... I bought a 1999 MBZ C43 AMG on Ebay last week. Very nice car with only 37K on it when I arrived to pick it up. Only problem was that the vehicle was located in Los Angeles, California. So I flew from FLL to LAX and proceeded to drive nearly 3000 miles (mostly by myself) across this great nation. My trip took me through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. The car averaged 26MPG at 70MPH and performed flawlessly.

I had the following incidents along the way:

I was interrogated by the Border Patrol somewhere just East of El Paso Mexico (!!!).

Got stuck in a forest fire that subsequently shut down I-10 in front of me for a few hours in Mississippi.

Got stuck in another forest fire. This time in Alabama and was forced to drive about 50 miles out of the way.

Took a direct hit from a rock in one of the driving lights somewhere around Houston, Texas.

It was a great trip overall. I must thank Trinitony for helping me find the car and doing some of the homework on it.

Here is the link to all the photos I took:

looks like a really nice car. can't believe on 37K and the vehicle is a '99. Is this going to be a daily driver?

About a year and a half ago I did New Orleans to Miami in a 1995 993 NA. That was a great drive as well. I love road trips. If anyone ever buys a car (PORSCHE!!!) that needs to be driven a long distance I'd be more than happy to drive it for you. Just pay my expenses to and from.....

+1. If you're 'on assignment', I'll gladly offer the same service!

I purchased my '95 993 in Seattle and drove it home, detouring way up into Canada for the sheer hell of it. Five days of bonding, swift speeds, beautiful scenery, and no issues whatsoever. I'd do it again tomorrow.

How many times did you stop to detail it on the way home?

Those are really nice cars, great sleepers, very strongly built. People think it's just another C-class, until they get bitten. I had one for a few days a couple of years ago, brokering it for a friend, but he changed his mind and couldn't part with it. I was thinking about buying it myself (like I need another car).
