After pulling the 4x6 speakers out and taking some measurements I think 6x9s are a bit big without a spacer and there will have to be quite a bit of cutting. There is only about 3 inches of depth. I got tired of thinking of all the options so I compromised bought some JL 5x7s for the back shelf. They were not very expensive. I'll get them wired up and go from there. Perhaps it will do the trick.

I bolted the JL 5x7 speakers in. I couldn't figure out how to pull the side interior panels off to run the wires so I'm not finished but I had to plug them in to hear them. They really fill in the sound nicely and add some bass and some depth. I'm quite happy for $170 plus $40 in wire (Cdn$$). I'll add a new deck and see how things go this summer.
I have attached a few pics of the install. It is really quite easy.
-unbolt the seat belts at the bottom. A little plastic cover comes off to access the bolt.
-undo the 4 screws so you can pull the deck off. Unplug the old speakers. pull the seat belts through
-pull of the speaker covers and remove 4 screws to take the speakers out of the deck
-mark out the new holes and cut them with a jigsaw
-mark the new hold down hole locations and drill 4 - 1/8" holes and slide on the nuts
-mount the speaker and connect the wires. I ran new wire but you could cut off the old connectors and crimp on new ones. (The old wires only go back to the deck or old amp I assume and I needed to go to the trunk mounted amp)
I just need to find grill covers now as they don't come with them.
As you can see from the pics there is no cavity to speak of behind the deck cover. (ok the attachments won't

VMX, I don't think mounting any speaker in the back deck of a 993 would be considered "free air" if you're thinking infinite baffle. There's like two liters of airspace back there.
